Welcome Ray Sonne to this week’s Reboot Comic Book Club. A writer for our own ComicsBulletin.com, as well as Women Write About Comics and Loser City, Ray recently corralled some other comics writers to celebrate the awesomeness that is Midnighter from DC Comics in a celebration that could only be referred to as “Midnighter Week.”
Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch first introduced me to the Midnighter over a decade ago within the pages of the Authority. But I must admit, I feel I really didn’t get to know the character until Steve Orlando and ACO‘s definitive take on the DC You-niverse’s incorporation.
Ray’s love of the character is palpable, which is why she organized Midnighter Week to begin with. In a world that is beginning to monetize diversity ‘for diversity’s sake,’ it’s a genuine surprise to see such nuance and sincerity in the pages of cape comics from one of the Big Two.
Ray on Midnighter:
“[Steve Orlando] has taken the character and done more with it than I’ve ever seen any writer do, and so many writers are obsessed with Midnighter. They’ll solely focus on Midnighter even when it’s an Authority book. But he takes it and you see elements of his work that are so old Authority-inspired but really subtly, and he’s twisting everything into this new thing, and it’s beautiful.“
