“Starting point for new readers!” So reads the green bar at the top of Chris Sebela’s Ghost, #9 with art by Harvey Tolibao on pencils and inks by Keith Champagne. That gorgeous cover, somewhat reminiscent of Adam Hughes, is rendered by Emanuela Lupacchino and Wes Dzioba.
The statement is not hyperbole. This is certainly a perfect jumping on point for the series.
The lovely protagonist, Elisa Cameron is a demon fighter, a resurrected spirit who had been a journalist who now wages war against the criminal element in Chicago. Aided by her young friends, Tommy, Sloane and Vaughn, she is a ghost on a mission, but it’s been a very rocky road to her current status.
Per the intro at the beginning of the book, “After demons cast her into an other-dimensional hell, Elisa Cameron was returned to our plane minus her memories, but with a host of new ghostly abilities.” Those abilities include the talents one might expect from any phantom, along with forces that seem to indicate a certain telekinetic power and of course she can appear or disappear as the situation demands. Elisa is a force to be reckoned with.
A brief yet comprehensive backstory is provided, allowing those new readers to learn the whys and wherefores of Elisa and the chance to get a feel for her personality and motivation and all amid the backdrop of the Windy City. A prime example is this beautifully written piece of dialogue when she’s taking on some of the baddies in her former home town: “I like to destroy weak little men who prey on others. Seen any around?”
This line is uttered in response to a group that is trying to abduct her kid sister and broaches the all too real horrors of the current scourge of human trafficking.
