Mignola has never bowed to convention, and House of the Living Dead is much more than a homage to Universal Horror. Sure, it is obvious that he wanted to make a story involving a bunch of classic monsters and some Mexican wrestlers, but the story ends up being more than the sum of its parts.
The eponymous Tharg the Mighty is only the alien horror host, and the stories inside are pure weird fiction joy. There is a little tongue-in-cheekiness, but that is all in the true-to-style asides by the horror host.
Baltimore: The Curse Bells is much more Poe than Lovecraft. And it is actually a disturbing, if not downright scary, comic. Even though there are vampires running around, there is also a sense of reality and its cruelty.
