Despite recent reports stating that Jonathan Hickman would be ending his run on Marvel’s flagship franchise, it’s been confirmed that he will now remain with the title for four more years.
“I had this new idea, and Marvel is letting me run with it” Hickman described. “I don’t want to give anything away, but if you though the stakes were high before, just wait until you see what we have in store.”
After killing the Living Tribunal and the entirety of Marvel’s omnipotent cosmic beings (once regarded as the invincible representations for every facet of our universe), one wonders where the Avengers may be heading.
“Secret Wars is just the beginning… these last few years have just been setup for the real story” Hickman noted. “The threat I have planned will change everything you know about the Marvel Universe. This isn’t just about the Avengers—this will cover the entirety of everything.”
His latest pair of series, Avengers and New Avengers, have spent years building the current story arc, bringing back the mysterious Beyonders, crashing alternate realities into each other and forcing our heroes to face moral dilemmas of unspeakable magnitude. He had the infinity gauntlet destroyed, Captain America betrayed, the Captain Britain Corps decimated, Thanos freed and the nations of Wakanda and Atlantis brought to war. We saw into Marvel’s very distant future, we saw the Annihilation Wave flicked away like a cheap toy and the god-like Celestials wiped out in a single page. According to Hickman, that is all nothing compared to his next story.
“If you thought characters like the Living Tribunal or Eternity—or even the Beyonders—were powerful, you’ll be shocked by the new threats I’ll slowly tease about in the coming years. We’re coming out of the gates strong with this new volume. Everything is already planned out, so over the next four years readers should have fun trying to figure out the point I’m trying to make.”
Rumors have also surfaced that after every twelve issues the series will reset it’s numbering, without any clear indication of why, but this speculation is still unconfirmed.
Hickman also cryptically teased that there’s a possibility that this volume will contain the biggest roster the Avengers have ever seen. “In many ways, every hero in the Marvel Universe is an Avenger. Keep that in mind.”
The news ended on a note to reinforce Hickman’s plans for the biggest, most drawn-out, far-reaching threat yet.
“This new looming threat won’t just affect the books you’re reading right now. It won’t even be exclusive to Marvel comics. This will affect every single comic book ever published in a drastic, never-before seen way! Nothing is safe, and no comic will ever make sense again until you see this story arc through to the end! Make sure you buy every issue!”
