Joe Sinnott is one of those artists who are so damn good that praise of his work is pointless. No need to append the great hitter to Lou Gehrig’s name; the great author to Hemmingway’s. You’ve seen Joe’s embellishments on just about every key Marvel character; his credits are simply staggering. So when Joe agreed to illustrate my story “Billboards” (ten years ago! where’s the time go?) I just about flipped.

Unfortunately, Joe’s not drawing much at the moment. While vacationing with his wife Betty in Myrtle Beach, he took a mean fall. “I stepped off a step and couldn’t catch myself,” Joe told me this morning. “Broke my right shoulder in four places.”

“Ouch,” I said.

Big ouch,” said Joe. “It’ll be two weeks this Thursday, but I still can’t sleep in a bed. They can’t set a shoulder, you know?just put it in a sling and hope for it to heal.”

Joe had just gotten back from the doctor when I phoned. He was in good spirits and feeling positive despite the pain, which he described as a constant ache. “They don’t think they’ll have to operate,” he said. “So we’re just keeping an eye on it and hoping for the best.

Needless to say, Joe won’t be drawing the Spider-Man Sunday strip any time soon. He’s undergoing physical therapy and praying for good news. Let’s pray with him. And visit him at, and feel free to send a get-well card or letter to P.O. Box 406, Saugerties, NY 12477. Tell him I sent you.
