Kickstarter Spotlight: Not So Super Comics

Robert J. Sodaro
July 18, 2014
Kickstarter Spotlight, News

Not So Super Comics is releasing three new first-issue comics at NC Comic Con this November, and the company is raising funds for printing costs on Kickstarter. They’re asking fans for help in making that happen.

Jacques E Nyemb is all about creating great comics that everyone can enjoy. From homespun heroes to vegan vampires, he has got your comic book cravings covered at Not So Super Comics. His comics consist of:

– Not So Super (with art by Joe Hunter) is a comic in which the main character, Daniel Douglas, lives in a world where the mild-mannered receive little attention. Every day simply speeds by and all Daniel sees in his immediate future in an eternal state of bachelorhood and entrapment by the company’s smart phone. Then one day his life takes a very weird turn when he wakes up with a random assortment of powers. The list of powers grows and Daniel never knows when they appear or disappear. None of the powers are particularly helpful to him and they find ways to inconvenience him at every turn. As a matter of fact, we see his life spiral into complete chaos as he maneuvers in our unforgiving modern world while attempting to determine what made him this way, and how to fix it.

– This Bites (with art by David DeGrand) is a comic in which the main character, Jasper, works at a record shop. He’s been a vegan since birth but whose life gets shaken when he gets bitten by a vampire. Now he finds himself with something of a interesting dilemma where he is trying to maintain his lifelong vegan lifestyle while fighting his newly acquired thirst for blood. He embarks on a journey with the help of his awesome grandmother to fight his way to a cure and prepare himself for a showdown with the vampire that bit him.

– Smörgåsbord Squad (with art by Justin Wood) is a two-part story in which part one is about the beautiful city of Hasenpfeffer, USA, which is made a little less beautiful as the feud between the Smörgåsbord Squad and H.U.N.G.E.R. Pack spills into the streets. Part two is about the origins of the Smörgåsbord Squad, which are are explored as the details of the day the group came together are revealed. (Art & Letters: Kayla Miller).

All three books were copyedited by Beverly Bambury of Beverly Bambury Publicity.

All of the money raised by this Kickstarter will go towards producing the first issues of Not So Super, This Bites and Smörgåsbord Squad, including printing costs and rewards for the backers. They are already working on the full one-shot graphic novels of each title. As can be expected, such an endeavor is a quite a bit of comics to create, and they are looking for a big launch. Their Kickstarter goal is designed to generate enough capital to print and get a copy of the first issues in the hands of readers this fall. Therefore, if you wish to support creator-owned comics, and want to see Not So Super Comics become a reality, they have some great rewards for you.

This project will only be funded if at least $3,500 is pledged by Friday, August 1 2014.

Robert J. Sodaro is a noted comic book historian and journalist. He began reading “Funnybooks” while sitting on the newsstand in his uncle’s “Mom & Pop” grocery store, and has been writing about them for so long that he’s become his own grandfather (we don’t really know what that means, we just like saying it). These days, he is just as likely to be writing comics as writing about them.
