Every week in a new installment of “Leading Questions”, the young, lantern jawed Publisher of Comics Bulletin Mark Stack will ask Co-Managing Editor Chase Magnett a question he must answer. Except for these next few weeks. The tables have turned onto the other foot as Chase prepares for his impending nuptials, and it falls to him to question and Mark to answer. Chase doesn’t plan on taking it easy on Mark. In fact, he might just ask him about things he knows nothing about just to watch him squirm.
Who is the best husband in superhero comics and why is it Mister Miracle?
I haven’t read any of the Fourth World stuff. My bad. Kirby is dope and this is his centennial, so I’m definitely planning on it. I can count the number of comics I’ve read featuring super-spouses Mister Miracle and Big Barda on one hand. There was that appearance Mister Miracle had in Sandman, Big Barda teaming up with Wonder Woman in that Sensation Comics anthology, and some of that Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok stuff in Justice League. They seem pretty cool. I’ve read enough “Ask Chris” columns to get the deal.
Chase Magnett is the one asking the question here, and there’s one panel that Chase loves to tweet out:
Tomorrow, Chase is getting married to the love of his life. I’ve hung out with them, so I think I can say that they’re a pretty great couple. There are some superficial similarities between them and Mister Miracle & Big Barda; she might be a a little taller than Chase and he has a tendency to skew sentimental. It doesn’t matter what I can see, but what Chase can. He sees parallels and he sees role models for how he wants to make his marriage and life work.
And that’s what I think makes Mister Miracle the best husband in superhero comics; he’s the one Chase is trying to emulate. See you at the reception, bud.
