NYCC: Oni Press Mega-Announcement Part One

A comics news article

By Natalie Parker

Yes folks, Oni Press has so much amazing news for us today that we couldn't possibly contain it in a single article! It's that huge. In fact, there's so much of it that even Oni Press editor in chief James Lucas Jones is astounded.

"I can't believe how much amazing stuff we're announcing at this show," says Jones. "We've got a new oversized hardcover graphic novel from Joe Harris and Adam Pollina, a pair of new series from writer Cullen Bunn, and a host of new projects involved in our 2013 re-envisioning of"

We'll come back to those projects later, fear not, but first we take a look at those books.

Wars In Toyland is a new deluxe graphic novel from long-time collaborators Joe Harris and Adam Pollina. A dark and devious tale, inspired by the classic story of Babes In Toyland, the book takes us on a young boy's journey through the once wondrous Toyland after the rise of the teddy dictator, Roxbury.

Teddy dictator! Wonderful!

Matthew, the protagonist, finds himself carried into Toyland by his own loyal toy soldiers after the disappearance of his brother, Alex. Learning that his sibling is a captive of Roxbury, Matthew leads his soldiers in an attack on the teddy bear's fortress, never considering that his brother may be beyond saving…

"Wars In Toyland is a story we've been looking to tell for a long, long time" said Joe Harris. "It's a dark fantasy about the things we throw away, the things we can't let go of and growing up, in a broad sense, even though it really sucks sometimes."

Artist Adam Pollina was keen to discuss his personal connection to the story, adding "Wars In Toyland is as close to my heart as any story I have ever drawn," before discussing his memories of childhood battles. "This graphic novel is heavily inspired by those childhood memories. I know I feel I'm still finding the courage to face the challenges in my life and win the battles ahead of me. This book is an expression of that struggle."

Harris & Pollina will be joined on Wars In Toyland by finisher Brent McCarthy and colourist Nolan Woodard.

Helheim is the first of two new Oni Press series announced by writer Cullen Bunn. A "viking horror series," the book will feature work by fan-favourite artist Jöelle Jones (12 Reasons Why I Love Her, Fables) and colourist Nick Filardi (Powers).

Set during the age of the Vikings, Helheim tells the story of Rikard, a young hero who stands against savage wild men and dark creatures terrorising a small village. Meeting them in battle, he pays the ultimate price and falls.

Rikard's fight is far from over though. Resurrected by an evil witch out for vengeance, the young Viking is brought back as a pawn in her bloody quest, but can his warrior soul ever be contained? Bunn promises a horror story of witchcraft, night creatures and the undead, starting March 2013.

"Once the threshold of Helheim is crossed, not even gods can escape."

The Sixth Gun: Sons Of The Gun is the follow up to 2010's Civil War era tale of supernatural mystery and deadly gunslinging The Sixth Gun. Penned by Bunn and the original series' artist / co-creator Brian Hurtt with artwork from Brian Churilla (Secret History of DB Cooper) and colourist Bill Crabtree, Sons of the Gun will delve into the individual stories of General Hume's horsemen, with each issue featuring a look at a different member of the ghastly gang.

The SIxth Gun

"Since the very first issue of The Sixth Gun, readers have clamored for more information about General Hume’s horsemen. And now the story can be told. What happened to the horsemen after their master died?"

The answers will be forthcoming in February.

Bunn paid tribute to his co-creators on both series. "Working with collaborators like Brian Hurtt, Brian Churilla, and Joëlle Jones reminds me just how lucky I am to be working in comics and working with Oni Press," he said. "I'm writing stories I genuinely love and I'm partnering with some of the best visual storytellers in the business."
