PIXEL COUNT: Video Game News Roundup for November 11th, 2011

A game news article

Happy 11/11/11, gamers! It is a day which will live on in our memories under one specific, succinct name: SKYRIM DAY! Usually, I write a nice, long intro and ramble on about stupid things and make a few wisecracks, but I need to get back on my Xbox 360 and roam the lands of Skyrim.

So choose your race, pick your character class, sharpen your blades and remember to duck when you see a dragon! It's Friday and I want to just say thank you for taking a bit of time off from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to read Comics Bulletin's little video game news roundup that could that we like to call...

There May Be Some Xbox 360 Graphical Issues That Will Be Addressed Soon...

Fair warning to those of us who picked up The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Xbox 360: Wait until the next update to install the game to your hard drive.

According to the Bethesda forums:

"Skyrim uses a lot of dynamic streaming systems, including textures. We’ve seen a few reports of certain textures temporarily scaling down on the Xbox 360, and not scaling back up. We have verified that this issue does not occur when playing off the disk and when the game is fully cached (not installed). Skyrim makes heavy use of the Xbox 360 caching system, and caches over the normal course of play while in menus or interiors. This cache can be wiped when other games are played or when the user manually removes it. We’re working on a solution in the next title update for those who have installed the game."

Now, those of us that have been buying Bethesda games know that it takes a while before the game is 100% ready. Usually, it even takes time after the game's release. One thing I will say to their credit is that they managed to fit the game's vast amount of content onto one DVD-9, and I applaud the hell out of them for such a feat. While I normally like installing games to my hard drive (quicker loads, quieter system since the disc isn't constantly spinning), I immediately deleted the game from my hard drive when I read the news. If you have already done so, I would recommend you do the same. If you're playing on PC or PlayStation 3, you're probably laughing at all of us right now. Well, guess what...

Xbox 360 Gamers Will Get Skyrim DLC a Month Before PC and PlayStation 3!

HA! Take that you mocking jerks!

While Skyrim DLC is most likely a ways off, Bethesda has announced that the first two pieces of downloadable content will be available one month earlier on Xbox 360 than on other systems.

While I own a PS3 and considered getting Skyrim it rather than my 360, I chose the Xbox because it was the same system I played Oblivion on and the original Xbox was where I played my first Elder Scrolls game, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, which I credit as the game that helped me realize that it wasn't RPGs that I hated, but Final Fantasy (bring on the nerd hatred).

Now, I am too glad that I got it on Xbox 360!

Modern Warfare 3 News

Modern Warfare 3 Broke Some New Records

Just like Black Ops before it and Modern Warfare 2 before that, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has become the "biggest entertainment launch ever".

While many were saying that Modern Warfare 3 would not top last year's record set by Call of Duty: Black Ops (or COD: BlOps for those of us who don't give a damn), Modern Warfare 3 sold 6.5 million units in its first 24 hours! And that is in the US and UK alone. The game made over $400 million one the first day alone, making it the most successful launch of any form of entertainment ever.

Not only this, but the game also set a record on Xbox LIVE for most concurrent players on the system. Gamers hit the system so hard that the recently launched Call Of Duty Elite service became unstable by the amount of players on it, causing Activision to now offer those affected a free month of service.

Modern Warfare 3 is the first Call of Duty game by Infinity Ward that I did not pick up. Maybe I will get it on Black Friday when stores give me a reason to pick it up, but with the large number of quality games being released this holiday season, I just did not care enough to get it. Especially with Infinity Ward being a mere shell of what it once was after many of the team left to join the former presidents at Respawn Entertainment. I hear the game is great, but I have become so tired of modern warfare first-person shooters.

Two years ago, I cared a whole lot! I have a Modern Warfare 2 Special Edition Xbox 360. Now, I feel I've outgrown it. It's a little sad. I feel almost like an adult...

News on Everything Else

Limbo Sells 1 Million Units! Now, It's Coming to Macs!

One of my favorite Xbox LIVE Arcade games from 2010's Summer of Arcade series was a weird, dark, freaky little game called Limbo. It won many an award, including a few Game of the Year awards.

Well, developers Playdead have announced that the game has reached 1 million units sold since its launch. For a little indie, downloadable game that no one saw coming, that really ain't half bad. Actually, it's pretty fucking awesome!

Limbo is now also available on PSN and PC, and the team at Playdead promises a Mac version will be available by the year's end.

I would personally like to congratulate all those fine folks over at Playdead for their landmark achievement and cannot wait to see what they have coming down the pike.

Ninja Gaiden 3 to be a Wii U Launch Title?

Tecmo Koei -- one of many developers to give early support to Nintendo's Wii U -- has announced that its upcoming, highly anticipated new entry into the Ninja Gaiden series, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, will launch along with the Wii U.

They also announced that the game will be out for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in February of next year.

As a fan of this series, I'm excited that it will be coming sooner than I had presumed. As for the news regarding the Wii U launch, I wonder how that title will work on the system. Will it play just as it does on the other consoles, or will Tecmo Koei give it some Wii U-exclusive features? Only time will tell...

DC Universe Online Brings In 1 Million New Players!

In the mere week that DC Universe Online has gone free-to-play, Sony Online Entertainment has garnered 1 million new players to its superhero MMO. The number is also said to be split pretty evenly between the PC and PS3 players.

This may be the only model for MMOs to take now. With World of Warcraft's numbers beginning to dwindle, I wonder if we will see Blizzard fully implement the free-to-play model. It already has it for players up to level 20. And since they will still be releasing more and more expansion packs and charging for items and other content, why not just embrace it?

If BioWare's upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic goes free-to-play after a few months (like DCUO), I don't see how they wouldn't be able to take WoW down. I don't want WoW to go away, mind you. I have just never liked the idea of paying $15 per month to play a game. I get that the servers need to be kept running, but Blizzard has made SO MUCH MONEY off this game.

It's about time to open the game up and get more people playing before BioWare strikes you down. Just knock out the subscription fee and I will gladly pay $20 for the title and however much more when I want to buy the expansions. Really, I will!

And if you haven't yet, try DC Universe Online. As a lover of video games and DC superheroes, it's just too much for me to enjoy...

EverQuest 2 Goes Free-to-Play and the Internet Asks, "People still play EverQuest?!"

After the huge numbers that came pouring in from Sony Online Entertainment's other MMO, DC Universe Online, SOE decided to make its other MMO free-to-play. What other MMO you ask? Why EverQuest 2.

Now, I know what you're thinking: Wasn't EverQuest that big MMO series that went away after World of Warcraft came on the scene? Well, yes and no. Yes, it was big and existed prior to WoW. No, it did not go away. I know, I am just as surprised as you are.

But it shall be joining the free-to-play model that so many have adopted at some point in December. For those of you who still care, congrats!

Gotham City Imposters Release Date and Beta!

According to Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, Monolith's first-person shooter -- Gotham City Imposters -- will be available January 10, 2012 on Xbox LIVE Arcade, PSN and PC.

And, if you want to try it even earlier than that, there will be an open beta available some time in December.

This game could be awful or all kinds of fun! Here's a trailer if you haven't heard of this one yet:

Sales of Rayman Origins Could Help Beyond Good & Evil 2 Get Released

Before I report this story, I have a message for those of you at Ubisoft: You guys are fucking assholes! Fuck you! I hope you all get a swift kick in your scrotal or vaginal areas for the shit you are trying to pull!

And now, the news:

Ubisoft is now saying that the sales of Rayman Origins could directly affect how soon the long awaited sequel to everyone's favorite game of last generation, Beyond Good & Evil 2, will be developed. Beyond Good & Evil and Rayman creator Michael Ancel is about to have his darling new title released this Tuesday.

November 15 is not only smack dab in the middle of the year's biggest release month, but it is also the biggest release date of the year. Ubisoft has released its 2D platform title (which is supposed to be AMAZING, by the way) at $60 amongst what many are calling the best holiday in the medium's history for quality titles. Ubisoft has just signed its own game's death warrant and I fucking hate them for it!

What's worse is that they are dangling a game that they showed a teaser trailer for over three fucking years ago without any intention of ever making!

What a collective group of assholes!

Professor Genki is just awesome!

Saints Row: The Third is out November 15... like very other fucking game. But this game looks awesome!

These videos are getting weirder...and less funny. Unfortunately, it's a slow week for video content...

Child's PlayThe last thing I wanted to let you all know was that the Child's Play charity has just kicked off its annual Holiday Season! Child's Play -- from the creators of the Penny Arcade webcomic -- is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of sick and hospitalized children with video games and toys in over 70 hospitals around the world. Since 2003, millions of dollars have been donated and used to help these kids have fun rather than just sit in a hospital room.

Child's Play works in two way: You can click on a hospital on the Child's Play donation page and pick a gift to donate from the wish list or make a cash donation through PayPal -- which Child's Play uses to buy video games, consoles, toys, books and other fun stuff for kids throughout the year.

It is a great cause and if you would care to donate, please go to the site and make a kid a little bit happier this holiday season.

Thank you.

OK, go ahead and get back to Skyrim. Thanks a lot for reading! Until next week...
