Omaha Comic Con: A Brand New Comic Con to Hit the Midwest

Michael Bettendorf
May 23, 2015
News

The Midwest has some well-known cons – we’re looking at you Chicago, Denver and Kansas City. Heralding from the very center of the country is Omaha Comic Con. From May 29th – 31st a budding con and expo debuts for it’s first annual comic convention. I was able to talk with Matt Fujan about the event.

Michael Bettendorf for Comics Bulletin: I ‘spose first things first, could you tell us a little bit about Omaha Comic Con? What’s it all about?

Matthew Fujan: OCC is a comic con expo right here in the omaha area which truly is the first of  its kind. We are committed to making it a fun, friendly weekend event, for the attendees and the guests! If you do not know what a comic expo is, you’re in for a treat!

CB: What can you tell us about guest list?

Fujan: We have over 30 guests! Seasoned convention veterans like Phil Hester, Cullen Bunn, Greg Smallwood, to up-and-comer creators like Brian Level, CW Cooke, and Brian Winkeler. This doesn’t even begin to touch on our media guests like Wrestling legend Mick Foley, Character actor Walter Koenig and Voice actor Billy West! our complete guest list is located here.

CB: Could you talk about the development of OCC? What’s the origin story, so to speak, of OCC? The Midwest has a fair amount of cons with Denver, Chicago and Kansas City all surrounding Omaha. What would you like to see OCC grow into?
Fujan: Well, originally we looked at the Omaha area, saw there was really no conventions on I80 between Chicago and Denver, and we thought that with over a million people in the Omaha area, we were due for a home grown creator centered convention. from there it turned into a labor of love where we’ve poured our hearts into making this event the event the Omaha area deserves!
You can read more about the event here at OCC’s website.
