The Reaper, a Mature Readers comic, has been re-launched as a Kickstarter project by its publishers, Atomic Ink Comix, and is well on its way to achieving its $2,800 goal and its deadline extended to Sunday, November 30 2014. The creators behind the canceled and (quickly-revived) project are asking previous backers to return to their Kickstarter page and re-pledge their amounts.
As for the story itself; Jake Hale is a hard-edged detective who takes on cases that no one else can seem to handle — oh, and he just may be the bastard son of the Grim Reaper, at least that’s the way the rumors go. According to Writer is John Medeiros the story of Jake Hales began some 30 years earlier, when his mother was attacked by a group of street thugs and almost killed. Well, while she was “saved” (but not in a good way) by something she could never fully explain. Ultimately she wishes that they had killed her. Nine months later she gave birth to Jake, a troubled lad who may or may not be the bastard son of the Grim Reaper. He is still (apparently) human, and (presumably) mortal…just, well, different.
This then begins the tale of Jake Hale. A Private Investigator who takes on the down and dirty cases that no one else is willing to handle. Recently, young women in Detroit are going missing, and the trail leads to a cult led by an evil and perverse Reverend named Kane. In the ensuing struggle, Jake and Kane go head to head in a bloody story of violence and mayhem that is viscerally illustrated by artist Brian McCranie (who is also the colorist). The Reaper is for mature readers only, and all Kickstarter backers will received an uncensored version of the comic. McCranie’s hard hitting, uncensored, and wonderful Illustrations will draw you in and keep you coming back, as will the hard-hitting tale by Medeiros.
The Reaper is published by Atomic Ink Comix and is slated to appear as an ongoing, monthly, full-color comic. The first issue is due out in December/January and the four-issue arc of Jake vs Kane is a self-contained story. As stated, Kane is the leader of a cult that kidnaps and violates women. Kane — although he claims the title of “minister” — has no morals and will do anything to keep his power. Now while Jake doesn’t have much in the way of morals himself, he does have a code by which he lives. In the end only one wills survive.
The team (which is rounded out by letterer Jessica Jones) needs your help to make all of this happen. We are told that all of the money that is raised from this campaign will go towards production costs of The Reaper #1; which is some 40% complete but they still need a big launch to help finish this issue, and set up the basics of the upcoming issues. So, if you are interested in supporting new, creative-owned comics, and like what you have seen so far in their Kickstarter page, they respectfully ask that you take the time to support their work.
This project will be funded on Sunday, November 30, 2014.
