Angel City is an interesting version of the noir mystery in that the supposed femme fatale is investigating a murder in the days of Hollywood’s studio system. A failed actress-turned-mobster, Dolores Dare puts it on herself to find out who killed her friend Faye.
Out in October, Angel City is a wonderful take on a genre that has been (pun totally intended) beaten to death. A breath of fresh air in a world of grim dark, I highly suggest you putting it on your pull list this fall.
This time on the club, Janet and Megan have chosen to read the late Darwyn Cooke‘s Selina’s Big Score, with colors from Matt Hollingsworth. There are few better ways to honor the fallen legend than this classic, combining his timeless take on superheroes combined with his ground-level examination of the criminal underworld. It’s like Parker meets Catwoman, if you need a better explanation.
Janet Harvey on Selina’s Big Score:
“The gorgeous, thick brushwork on this. I want to lick it, it’s so beautiful. Like when she goes to Miami, all of the palm trees are these sort of big, brush stroke lines that are sort of expressionistic palm trees but they’re just beautiful. Oh my gosh, that’s so great.”
