WYND #1 main cover

Review: WYND #1 a fantasy comic with a lot of heart

BOOM Entertainment

(W) James Tynion IV (A/C) Micheal Dialynas (L) Aditya Bidikar

The award-winning team, who created The Woods, James Tynion IV (Batman, Something is Killing the Children) and Micheal Dialynas (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Gotham Academy) have reunited to make WYND. This new limited run series may be Boom’s most anticipated  series of the year. WYND had nearly 40,000 advanced orders at FOC. This puts it in good position to be Boom’s biggest creator-owned launch ever. This shouldn’t be too big a surprise with the hot streak Tynion IV has been on of late: writing the highly acclaimed Something is Killing the Children, taking over the reigns of DC’s flagship title Batman, and creating the new Batman villain, Punchline, which created a large speculator boom on her first appearance.

Tynion IV released the following statement about WYND:
“WYND is my dream project, the one that I’ve been working on intermittently since I was in high school. Seeing it come to life with Micheal’s art has been one of the greatest pleasures of the year, and the idea that we’re going to get to bring it into the world in glorious oversized issues starting this summer is deeply exciting to me. We’re really proud of this one.”

Don’t let Micheal Dialynas’ warm and cuddly cover art fool you, this is a story that will touch on some serious topics. Wynd is a boy who lives in a place called Pipetown. A place where someone like him, who comes from a magical background, can be punished by death. He must keep his identity hidden even if it keeps him from the life he may want. When the king brings back a dark figure to town to search for “Weirdbloods” Wynd’s happy, yet precarious, existence may be put in jeopardy.

The oversized 40 page issue really gives time and space for the writing of Tynion IV and the art of Dialynas to bring the world of Wynd to life and create some very poignant moments in the meantime. This slowly developing story leaves several very intriguing avenues to be explored and I for one am interested in seeing where WYND goes in the upcoming issues.

Every issue of WYND will be 40 pages. WYND #1 goes on sale Wednesday, June 17th for $3.99. Two variant covers are offered for issue #1 by highly acclaimed artists Dan Mora (Once and Future) and Peach Momoko.
