This 40-page special sets up major changes in the Amalgam universe for the coming year. Ted Riley, The Blue Spider investigates money laundered through his company to something called “The Galactus Project”. Blue tries to get help form his fellow heroes, but most dismiss him as a joke. His friend Jack Gold, cyber-jock from the future, reflects how things haven’t been the same since the death of Alicia Dibney, (seen in Ultimate Identity Nightmare Crisis). Over the course of Ted Riley’s investigation, we learn:

• Dark Claw knows the Judgment League tampered with his mind. This is why he helps the Galactus Project.
• Lex “Green Skull” Luthor assembles a new Masters of Injustice.
• Adam Quasar defends his adopted world in the Rann-Skrull War.
• The wizard Shazam warns of dangerous times for magic users, including the Night Spectre and Captain Marvel.

Ultimately, Ted learns what “The Galactus Project” really is: an attack by a phony alien monster, created by the Super-Human Investigation, Experimentation, and Defense Department, (S.H.I.E.L.D.). A new form of energy is used to power a monstrous cyborg that will fight and destroy every super-being on Earth. But the biggest shock comes when Ted meets the true leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Rick “Clapper” Carr, freelance sidekick and former mascot of the JL:A. He’s been the “go-to” guy in the superhero community. He even funded the League during the years Ted was a member. Now he reveals how it was all part of his master plan. He’s been spying for S.H.I.E.L.D. for years. Together, they will, “reclaim Earth for real people”. He offers Ted the chance to join them. Ted refuses, of course. Rick shoots him, then activates the “Captain America Corps”.

Meanwhile, unknown to all but the alien android held by S.H.I.E.L.D., the real Galactus, "He that Consumes Galaxies," awakens from his long slumber.

Well this is damned exciting! An all-out war between humans and metas, an alien demi-god, and an annoying sidekick turned bad-ass villain. This should rock!

I’m looking forward to the mini-series that come from this. C.A.C. should detail Dark Claw’s plans against his fellow Avengers. Villains Assembled will bring together the deadliest people in the AU, under the brilliant mind of Lex Luthor. Strange Days will settle the feud between the Speed Demons and the Night Spectre once and for all. And maybe we’ll finally learn the connection between Billy Baston and the Kree Empire in the Rann-Skrull War. As for Ted Riley, I wouldn’t count him out. Remember, S.H.I.E.L.D. has its secret cloning facility, the Cadmus Project.

After a build-up like this, I’m expecting a whole new Amalgam Universe next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they destroy the whole thing and start over from scratch!
