I want to start off by saying that I was given this issue gratis to review and havenít read the first six issues, so my review will be skewed by that factor. Iím going to cheat here and just throw in the back coverís synopsis:

ďIt is a time for heroes. With Kusanagiís demonic minions over-running the city, Vasrio, Jaeminae, Baenshe, Hoek and Taep must stand together and face them down. But what are five people against a legion from Hell itself? Meanwhile, the government controlled military is closing in, squeezing the city--for all the good it does. The citizens are still dying, fast or slow the end result is the same. And just when it looks like things can get no worse, the unimaginable happens. PHOBIA is betrayed by one of their ownÖĒ

Now, I quoted that because I didnít notice it until after I had read the story, and that back cover gave me more insight into what was going on than the story itself did. I really think these futuristic technology-driven demonic invasion stories work better as video games than as comic books, but maybe thatís just me. If this had been a game by Square/Enix, I would probably enjoy it greatly, but as it stands itís just too unfocused for me to really be drawn into in comic form.

The beginning presents a little girl being rescued by some soldier from a bunch of gross creatures. The little girl asks if thereís something wrong with her since she felt nothing during the whole experience. Does this mean she is an integral character in the story? I thought so, but then sheís not mentioned again. Then some scientist tries to end everything by logging into a computer system, only to have a demon on a monitor berate him for taking away his family, making us feel bad for the demon and possibly think that everything is the scientistís fault. Yet this is never played upon again later, and the demon is simply presented as evil.

Another thread that keeps being hinted at is the existence of some neural implant in the regular people, apparently keeping them from turning into demons themselves. Does this mean that theyíre all really evil, or that the demon can control human minds unless suppressed with this inhibitor? Itís unclear.

The art is also unclear. At one point two people falling freely to their deaths are grabbed by some type of amorphous substance, but on the next page itís shown as a simple tether hanging from a helicopter. Then on next page it looks like demons are feeding on one soldier while another identical soldier looks on, but this is actually the artistís way of showing a close-up of the same soldier without splitting the panel (as he should have done). Oh, and apparently these people can thrust their entire fist into their nasal cavities without even getting a bloody nose afterwards.

As I said before, Iím sure this would make a good video game, but it just isnít my cup of tea in comic form. I would be interested in seeing how well it does over in Asian markets, if sold there, compared to the U.S. market, since it seems to be a more common type of story over there, what with all the role playing games that use similar concepts for their stories.
