Green Lantern Corps #35

It's gotten to the point where I look forward to new issues of Green Lantern Corps just as much, if not more, than those of the main Green Lantern title. I feel Peter Tomasi has a much stronger grasp on his characters, takes more time to delve into their heads where Geoff Johns, in Green Lantern, who is more concerned with defining all the different factions of the "War of Light." And "Emerald Eclipse" is Tomasi's fastest paced adventure yet in the pages of Green Lantern Corps, making it a perfect entry point for new readers, as well as getting current readers amped for the impending "Blackest Night."

I've also noticed that Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps have begun to tie together into a much more compact narrative. Plot threads started in Green Lantern carry over into Green Lantern Corps, characters in one book reference plot points from the other, and there is a constant interplay between the varying factions of light--namely the pink, yellow, and red lanterns. What this does for both titles is truly make it a case of "the sum is greater than the individual parts" making the Green Lantern franchise absolutely exhilarating to read each month because both books fill in pieces to an epic big picture.

As for the actual content of issue #35--I previously mentioned the blistering pace of this story and part three of "Emerald Eclipse" is the most frantically paced of the arc thus far. And I don't mean that in a bad way, prison riots should be intense, feeling like a wild fire rapidly spreading across a forest, and that's exactly how Green Lantern Corps #35 starts and never lets up. The issue jumps between the actual riot on Oa involving Kyle and Guy, Sodam and Arisia's infiltration of Daxam, and Soranik and Iolande's attempt to calm the angry citizen's of Korugar due to Sinestro's escape. Every transition between scenes is pitch perfect, leaving the action at the perfect moment-- satisfying readers with content but leaving them itching for more. And then there's the cliffhanger, carried over from a recent Green Lantern issue where Atrocious revealed the existence of Sinestro's daughter.

But not all the praise for Green Lantern Corps rests on the shoulders of Peter Tomasi. Patrick Gleason, the series' artist, is performing at tip-top shape and gives a very distinctive style and look to the characters of the book. I love his overly exaggerated bodies and faces, and they really pop off the page when coloring is applied. Especially when the comic is so dependent on bright splash colors like a Green Lantern book is. The only fault I can find with some of Gleason's panels is that he finds some really odd angles to "shoot" his shots at which aren't always the best way to effectively showcase the action on camera. The specific example I'm thinking of with issue #35 is the opening fight between the Red Lantern and Green Lantern Voz. One panel he frames inside the vagina mouth of the red lantern showing the red rage juice burst the Green Lantern's shielding. However, the angle is so awkward that it's hard to notice the GL's protective bubble bursting. Framing the sequence from a mid-range distance, while sticking to an over the shoulder shot would have better showcased the action Gleason was attempting to depict. But then again, this misstep is rare, and doesn't tarnish the overall visual beauty of a Patrick Gleason drawn Green Lantern Corps issue.

So let me reiterate--go out and buy Green Lantern Corps. It's just as good, if not better than Green Lantern and really fills in the missing pieces leading to the hugely hyped "Blackest Night" event. A lot of people are interested in DC's next summer event and GLC is a perfect way to hype yourself up and get informed with everything the event intends to bring.
