This is how “daily” columns become “almost daily” columns.
Right now it’s Sunday morning and I’m sitting at the boarding gate, almost two hours early for my 11:49 AM flight. Now this time yesterday, I was trying to get Day Two into my editor’s hands before finding a shuttle to the convention center, but instead of just walking my ass to the Internet café again, I had this brainstorm that involved John Layman’s computer. Layman has been the third roommate these last few days, and he brought along his significantly more powerful Macintosh IBook, with the built-in wireless card. He’s been telling me to just type the column into his computer and send it off using the hotel’s hookup since about Wednesday, and even though I had already typed it up the night before, I finally went for it. Not the fastest typist so it took about 40 minutes to finish, spot-editing along the way. Then I fired up Internet Explorer and found out that the hotel’s wireless server had crashed, and they had no idea when it’d be back up. So, I wasted almost an hour re-typing the column into Layman’s computer just so he could have a copy of it for his hard drive, apparently. And I was running late for a meeting, and didn’t have time to stop by the café. Then there was swearing, most likely.
Did reach the center in time to link up with artist Damion Hendricks around the Image pavilion, and introduced ourselves to Erik Larsen, to let him know we’ll have some hotness coming his way in the next couple weeks. I already have something signed up with Image, and despite the artistic problems I’m having with it, my fingers are crossed that it’ll give me enough juice to push the second one on through. This is The Pitch That Killed Mark Powers at Marvel, for anyone interested. We ducked out the frame, as it was obvious that Erik was just trying to walk a span of about twenty feet, and couldn’t because all of us hopefuls were mobbing him with artwork.
Even though Damion and I met up the day before, we didn’t have time to really talk face-to-face about our project, and anytime we can chill on the e-mails and trade ideas in person or over the phone, I end up even more excited about it. I re-wrote the first arc recently, so I gave him a quick walkthrough of the faster, leaner story now known as Phase 3. This is what happens when things are allowed to sit for months at a time, and I’m able to look at them from different perspectives. The scripts I’m writing now are much better than the ones that emerged months before, and now being hypersensitive to the stylistic shift that’s happening in mainstream comics, there’s a different set of requirements to meet. Oh, it’s almost boarding time, I’ll explain what the hell I’m talking about in the air.

Okay, does anybody remember the tirade from a couple months back in Recompression? Situations like that become the best things about writing a weekly column for any length of time, because even though that was written pretty recently, I’ve probably changed my mind about half of it already. Contradiction is inherent with almost anything, and if I’m not changing or modifying my opinion about certain issues in relation to the industry, than it’s a good sign that I’m really full of shit. The game changes a little bit every Wednesday, and though I hold several views that remain inflexible, everything else is up for grabs and further interpretation. Point being, that my scripts are moving significantly faster now, and for the time being, that’s what I’m aiming for. Things planned for issue 12 are now in issue 6, and the slow initial burn that was in the original draft is just burn now, and judging by Damion’s reaction, he’s cool with that. But if we can get a publisher, I think people are definitely gonna feel this, and if Millar hadn’t dropped Wanted, this would be absolute genius, instead of just regular genius.
After that jumped into the Marvel X-Men panel to support the kid John Layman who was on his first X-Men panel to represent the upcoming Gambit series. I was going to ask him a question but he told me not to, thinking Marvel would spot me as a “plant.” If I can ever get my ass on a panel, I’ll be arranging every “plant” I can find, but that’s just me. Even without a contribution from me, he scored the last question of the entire panel, and just sitting here, I’ve had a pretty cool idea for an interview that I know for a fact he’ll agree to.
The only other panel I hit was Cup o’ Joe, where I touched base with Augie of Pipeline fame, who told me how CBR unintentionally blew the news of the Warren Ellis exclusive. Wonder if anyone would’ve noticed if it was in my first column for Wednesday? Ah, well, maybe next year, though I’d hope to be in a position where Marvel would be really upset with me if I leaked major news, if you know what I mean. And I have to admit that even though Marvel is expanding at a frantic pace these days, the talent on the books is top notch, and I don’t think many people could argue with Bendis, Priest, Ellis, and Brubaker responsible for the Avengers line.
The rest of my last day was spent at Arcade, touching base with Rob Liefeld about X-Force, and the upcoming Shatterstar miniseries, which is now expanded to three issues I believe. The actual scripting of this will probably be touched on in a future column, assuming I can get permission from the necessary parties, which is debatable, but you know, never hurts to ask. That comes out in the fall.
For dinner, I just ordered in a pizza, because I’ve been running myself into the ground lately, and had to be up for my flight. Started reading Small Gods from Image, but passed out before finishing the second issue. But even dog tired, I know that is a book that you need to check out when it drops in a couple weeks, and I’ll explain why at length in the very near future. Don’t know if I’ll need to take a break from this next week, but we’ll see.
