There’s just no way to give a comic like this a rating. It’s just not that sort of comic book. It’s too special, too precious, like the life of a young seventeen-year-old boy just beginning to figure out his role in life.
Sam Loeb died a year ago after battling cancer. He was only 17 years old. As a tribute to Sam, his father Jeph Loeb recruited many of his friends in the industry to take part in a special one-shot story that focused on the friendship between Robin and Superboy. Yes, the Superboy in this comic is the one who recently died in Infinite Crisis. It’s a wonderful comic, though bitterly sad to imagine young Sam feeling empathy with poor, doomed Superboy.
The backup strip brings back the acclaimed team of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, as a continuity implant for their Superman: For All Seasons book. It’s a heartbreakingly sweet story, and the final panel is just devastating.
This really is a terrific comic, but that’s not the point. All proceeds from this comic benefit the Sam Loeb College Scholarship Fund. Buy a few copies and donate it to your local children’s hospital.
