What Looks Good for 12/23/15: DC and Marvel

Big Two, What Looks Good

Welcome back to another edition of What Looks Good: The Big Two!

DC

Astro City #30Astro City #30, $3.99

Last issue saw the first part of a new story featuring some Kirby-style aliens who absolutely HATE us. But do they have a good reason? Part of what this series does so well is that it takes these kind of blind assumptions that we have regarding superhero stories and it questions them. And it does so with great art and wonderful characters.

Last Gang in Town #1Last Gang In Town #1 (Of 7), $3.99

I’m a big fan of Exterminators. I fell behind on the Federal Bureau of Physics and it up and got canceled. Basically what I’m saying is that I enjoy Simon Oliver’s work and I expect no different from this series. I will say that I appreciate that it’s a finite series so that I don’t get attached only to see it come to an abrupt end.

Robin #7Robin Son Of Batman #7 (Robin War), $3.99

The purchase of this comic is dependent upon my continued happiness with the Robin War crossover. The Court of Owls is probably the only thing I’ve liked about Scott Snyder’s tenure on Batman, so I’m happy to see them involved. And it would appear that we’re getting more hints that someone is going to be the new Nightwing…

Teen Titans #15Teen Titans #15 (Robin War), $2.99

Can a tie-in to a crossover that I’m actually enjoying make this title tolerable? I honestly don’t know. Probably not. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I don’t know why this book even exists. There are no Titans in this new DCU. Just let it go already.

Titans Hunt #3Titans Hunt #3 (Of 12), $3.99

Okay, I take that back. There are THESE Titans, but who these Titans are isn’t exactly clear yet. I’m fine with that right now, though. The callbacks to the old DCU make my heart pitter patter and I’m a sucker for strange conspiracies. It will be sad when this team comes together and there’s no Kid Flash, though. Still, I’m hoping that the finale of this series will lead into some major changes for the above mentioned book. A new Titans book, maybe? Minus the “teen?”

Marvel

Moon Girl #2Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur #2 (Amy Reeder Regular Cover), $3.99

The first issue of this series was a lot of fun and Moon Girl is easy to like. I had no idea what to expect from the art, but Natacha Bustos gave me exactly what I wanted. Seriously, can we relaunch Marvel as a line of comics? Or divide them in half, with one line being books like this and the other half being all those ridiculous X and A books?

Hellcat #1Patsy Walker A.K.A. Hellcat #1 (Brittney Williams Regular Cover), $3.99

This is kind of weird. This book is clearly intended to be all ages, which is great, as we don’t have enough comics like that. But Patsy Walker has recently gotten a publicity boost from the Jessica Jones series on Netflix and that is anything but all ages. In a strange way, this comic is meant to be appeal to a wider audience, yet might actually do the opposite, if fans of the show actually give it a try. But who’s to say they won’t dig it, anyway?

Spider-woman #2Spider-Woman #2 (Javier Rodriguez Regular Cover), $3.99

Did you read the amazing review of issue #1 we have here at CB? You really should.
