For this week’s installment of “What Looks Good,” we take a look at three new #1s from outside the Big Two, as Image and BOOM! Studios continue to jockey for the industry’s coveted spot as the third largest publisher. Also, we check in with the folks at Heavy Metal, who have a new book by a famous newcomer.
Big Girls #1 (Image Comics)
(w/a) Jason Howard
Not going to lie, all I needed to see from the solicit was “John Wick” and “Godzilla.” — Dan Gehen
When men become giant monsters hellbent on destroying the world, only girls can stop them-BIG GIRLS. Meet Ember-she writes poetry, loves to read, and she’s a 300-foot-tall full-time monster killer! She and the other big girls are all that stand in the way of our world’s complete annihilation! Critically acclaimed artist JASON HOWARD (TREES) takes full creative control as the writer and artist of a tale that’s a cross between JOHN WICK and GODZILLA by way of HBO’s GIRLS.
Fishkill #1 (Heavy Metal)
(w) Dan Fogler, Laurence Blum (a) Ben Templesmith
Usually, the stunt of a famous person taking a stab at writing comics falls flat. Look no further than Spider-Man from J.J. Abrams. However, Heavy Metal is known for taking chances and finding creators that are genuinely talented. Also, comics newcomer Dan Fogler isn’t exactly the most famous person in Hollywood, and getting someone as talented as Ben Templesmith on board makes Fishkill worth checking out. — Dan Gehen
Dan Fogler, actor in The Walking Dead and J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts series, lends his writing talent to an original new comic book! Fish Kill is a love story wrapped in a modern noir that takes our hero, Detective Bart Fishkill, so far down the conspiracy rabbit hole that he starts to question his own sanity even to the point of wondering whether if he isn’t the villain in the first place.
Seven Secrets #1 (BOOM! Studios)
(w) Tom Taylor (a) Daniele di Nicuolo
So wait, you mean to tell me there’s an anticipated new book from Tom Taylor and it doesn’t involve some sort of dystopian nightmare for the DC Universe? All jokes aside, Taylor has emerged as one of the industry’s powerhouse creators, and given BOOM! Studios’ recent track record for creator-owned properties, Seven Secrets looks great. “Looks” is the key word, as Daniele di Nicuolo’s art is ridiculously good. — Dan Gehen
For fans of Once & Future and Undiscovered Country comes an all-new original series from #1 New York Times best-selling author Tom Taylor (DCeased) and artist Daniele di Nicuolo (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) about seven powerful secrets-words, wonders, weapons, and worse-with the power to change the world..
For centuries, the Order has trusted in Keepers and Holders to guard the Secrets in seven briefcases against all harm, but when their stronghold is attacked and the secrets put in peril, the entire Order must face their greatest fear-an enemy who knows too much and is willing to kill to get what he wants.
Now, the Order’s newest member, Caspar, must discover the truth of the Secrets before the enemy does, or risk losing everything.
