Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) continue their adventures in New York City in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2, coming in May!
The Walking Dead may have concluded with its eleventh season in 2022, but the zombie franchise continues to bear plenty of content for fans. For instance, there’s Daryl Dixon (which enters its third season later this year) and the requisite The Ones Who Live, which marked the return of series favourites Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira).
Another project in the Walking Dead Universe is Dead City. The series is set in none other than Manhattan, and follows unlikely duo Maggie and Negan. In season 1, the duo worked together to save Maggie’s son Hershel after he was kidnapped by a New York gang. By the end of season 1, Maggie successfully reunited with Hershel. However, Negan remained in Manhattan, after being offered a high-power job by the city’s leader; the Dama herself.
Ahead of the new season’s premiere in May, AMC recently released the opening minutes of season 1. The scene takes place in the streets of New York, where walkers are slain… and converted into biofuel. It’s a pretty ingenious idea if you ask me. Check it out:
Where are Maggie and Negan at the start of The Walking Dead: Dead City?
Despite being placed into a position of power and reunited his his iconic barbed-wire baseball bat, Lucille, Negan isn’t too happy with his position in season 2. “At the beginning of the season, we find him having a hard time with all of it,” star Jeffrey Dean Morgan said during IGN Fan Fest. “He’s always scheming and trying to figure out how he can get on top of the situation, but he finds himself in a hard spot.”
As for Maggie, it’s not much easier… being a mother to a teenager. “My son is still a teenage boy and there are these natural tensions of navigating just family life. And I’ve got Ginny in my care and she’s a teenage girl,” Cohan explained. “And so there are very relatable domestic dynamics that are playing out as we come back in season 2, on top of this apocalyptic world and trying to eat and stay safe and sleep.”
The Walking Dead: Dead City premieres May 4, 2025 on AMC. Season 1 is also coming to Netflix later this month, following the huge success of The Ones Who Live on the streamer.
