‘Absolute Martian Manhunter’ is Ending… But Maybe Not Forever

From writer Deniz Camp and artist Javier Rodríguez, Absolute Martian Manhunter has been one of the most successful titles in DC’s Absolute Universe. It will release its final issue in May — although Camp leaves the door open for more.

Deniz Camp has been on a winning streak over the last year, to say the least. From his Ultimates work at Marvel, to his anthology series Assorted Crisis Events at Image Comics (which was our favorite series of 2025), everything Camp works on has been a smash-hit. His Absolute Universe title, the mind-bending, abstract Absolute Martian Manhunter, is arguably his best. Like Assorted Crisis Events, it brings out the very best of the comics medium.

Originally, Absolute Martian Manhunter was solicited as a six-issue mini-series but got extended to ongoing series status thanks to overwhelming popularity. It returned in December 2025 for issue #7. But now, as we approach issue #12 in May, both Camp and Rodriguez have confirmed that the series will conclude with #12. This decision was on their terms. The ending is what was planned for the series from the outset.

“And to be clear, this isn’t some abrupt ending,” Camp wrote in a post on X. “This ending is actually the ending I wrote in my original pitch (with a bunch of the details changed). This is the story I always set out to tell, that grew and deepened in the telling, and in collaborating with Javi.”

Of course, Camp did explore ways to continue the narrative. “I did see ways to continue on from it, but I always do,” he added. “This 12 issues is going to feel complete and thematically whole. If we had continued, it would have been a fresh start anyway.”

The fear was that continuing the series would, ultimately, see it lose its magic. It’s ending on a high note. “If we had continued, I worried we’d fizzle out, lose some of the magic,” he explained. “Right now I feel that every issue of this book is special — I didn’t want to jeopardize that. So part of it is a relief. And if we come back some time in the future, we’ll have worked out something worthy.”

“It’s been made very clear to us over and over again that we can come back and do more anytime we want. That is very possible.”

In addition, Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder celebrated the series on X, writing: “Only ending bc that’s what brother Deniz and Javi decided – one of our best ever.”

So for Absolute Martian Manhunter, it feels like less of a goodbye and more of a farewell, for now. If it ends with issue #12 and never returns, we’ll always look back on the run as masterful. If it does return one day, we’ll be over-the-moon excited. It’s a win-win.
