Andrew Garfield “would love” to play Spider-Man again

Andrew Garfield speaks candidly about potentially returning to play Spider-Man in a future Marvel project. While open to the idea, he admits that it would “have to be very weird.”

Once an actor has played Spider-Man, it’s a role that sticks with them throughout their careers. Just ask Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, both of whom came out of web-slinging retirement to reprise their iconic roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The mantle is currently held by Tom Holland (who will be filming his fourth solo movie later this year), but that’s not to say there isn’t room for another older Spider-Man tale sometime in the MCU’s future.

This brings us to Andrew Garfield, who recently weighed in on the possibility of making a triumphant return as Peter Parker. At the end of No Way Home, his Spidey returned to his own universe. There’s more than enough room and scope to continue developing his story if desired. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but we do have one positive sign: Garfield himself is open to a return.

“I really loved playing Spider-Man. I would love to play the character again in some capacity, but I think it would have to be very weird,” Garfield said during a recent fan event, which you can watch here. “I think I would like to do something very strange, I would want to do something very unique, and offbeat and surprising.”

In addition, he rhapsodised about his love for the animated movies, such as Into the Spider-Verse. “Kind of like the creative freedom they have with the animated ‘Spider-verse’ movies. I think they’re so great, and you can honour the character in so many ways through the multiverse,” he explained. “That is the truth, and I know that I am going to be the boy who cried wolf forever.”

Marvel Studios’ next live-action Spider-Man movie is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Of course, Tom Holland will return as our central Spidey. There’s no word on whether any other iterations of the character will show up, but most viewers would’t be opposed to seeing an Andrew Garfield cameo. He and Tobey Maguire will be linked to returning to the Marvel Universe for the rest of their careers; that’s just how it works.
