Readers will be able to pick up Assorted Crisis Events #8 in newsprint when it debuts in January 2026.
From Deniz Camp and artist Eric Zawadzki, Assorted Crisis Events has been one of our standout comics 0f 2025. Published by Image Comics, the series brings out the best of the comic book medium. It’s daring, pushing the medium to its limit through tales that range from mind-bending adventures, to devastatingly tales of heartbreak. As sci-fi as the tales get — and they do get wild very often — the human side always strikes at the forefront.
The series will reach its 8th issue in January 2026, and for its first story of the new year, it’s being printed in newsprint (the style of paper famously used for printing newspapers). Of course, in the early years of comics, most of them were printed in newsprint. The low-cost method helped publishers print bulk copies. By the mid-90s, printing shifted to high-grade glossy stock, and we haven’t really looked back since. Some indie publishers print in newsprint for a classic aesthetic, but it’s very few and far between nowadays.
The newsprint edition of Assorted Crisis Events #8 is available in the single issue only; it will be its usual format for other editions. While it might seem like a gimmick to print an issue in vintage newsprint, turns out that Camp has ensured that it seamlessly fits into the story being told.
“This issue will be printed on newsprint for single issues, but not in the trade,” Camp wrote on X. ” If you have any interest in this issue, I HIGHLY recommend picking up physically in singles. There are reasons!”
Titled Life in the Gutter, the upcoming issue follows a struggling comic book artist, who quite literally gets lost within the gutters of his work. The official synopsis reads: “A homeless comic book artist falls into the gutters – literally! Can Wally find his way back to life and reality, or is he lost in the blank white space between panels forever?”
