Both Black Panther and The Dark Knight feature in The New York Times’ list of the best 100 movies of the 21st century.
The 21st century has been rife with superhero movies. Thanks to billion-dollar franchises, namely Marvel and DC, the genre has been at the pinnacle of pop culture throughout the century so far. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, for instance, grew into an international phenomenon, with 11 movies grossing over a billion dollars at the box office. DC has endured slightly less success, but also saw more than a few top tier movies in the last 25 years.
As voted for by The New York Times, in a report that sought the opinions of 500 actors, directors & other notable voices in Hollywood, the publication has unveiled a list of the top 100 best movies of the 21st century. As a site focusing on geeky things, we were especially interested in seeing which superhero flicks were featured. No doubt, you’ll be unsurprised to learn that Christopher Nolan’s Batman epic, The Dark Knight, comes in at #28. This is the obvious choice, it is objectively the best superhero movie of the century so far, perhaps even of all-time. The other movies in Nolan’s trilogy, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises, are also outstanding.
Of course, you can’t discuss superhero movies without mentioning the MCU. Marvel Studios’ behemoth franchise has dominated superhero movies for almost two decades. The only Marvel movie to feature on NYT’s top 100 list is Black Panther (2018), coming in at 96th place. The movie is Marvel’s most illustrious award-winning instalment, nominated for seven awards at the 91st Academy Awards, winning three.
Of all the superhero movies of the 21st century, these two are probably the most worthy of being the two featured in this list. Logan is unlucky not to be included, as is genre-epic Avengers: Infinity War. Which movies would you feature? Tell us in the comments down below!
