It’s always one of my favorite weeks of the month when all my lovely sci-fi books all come out at once and lately different publishers have given me a smorgasbord on different weeks. It has been a glorious time for sci-fi comics. Boom! is making it even more exciting by adding a great number every month. First it was Arcadia, then Broken World, and now The Spire!

Arcadia #3 (Cover A Matt Taylor), $3.99

Arcadia #3 (Cover B Eric Scott Pfeiffer), AR

In case you haven’t heard, Arcadia is one of my favorite new series. The third issue is intense and beautifully drawn. Tension between Arcadia and The Meat continues to build as Arcadia worries that their are plots to end their existence and Earth worries that Arcadia will continue to be a detrimental energy drain on the world.

big trouble

Big Trouble In Little China #12 (Cover A Brian Churilla), $3.99

Big Trouble In Little China #12 (Cover B Nick Robles), AR

There’s more trouble in Chinatown.

Broken World #2 (Of 4)(Cover A Christopher Peterson), $3.99

The second issue of Broken World has a Y the Last Man vibe with the world in chaos, this time not because it is ending, but because it didn’t. Elena discovers that there may be a way to find her family and she sets out to do so, helping an old student along the way.

Cluster #5 (Cover A Damian Couceiro), $3.99

Cluster #5 (Cover B Brandon Graham), AR

Issue 5 starts a new story arc for Cluster! Samara and the rebels decide to take a stand.

Help Us Great Warrior #5 (Of 6)(Cover A Becca Tobin), $3.99

I was initially really excited about Help Us! Great Warrior because it was funny and quippy and cute. As it’s gotten deeper into its storyline, however, I feel like it has lost a little bit of its charm. This issue is still great, but I miss Great Warrior’s love for pizza, sleeping, and beautiful people.

Regular Show #25 (Cover A Pamela Lovas), $3.99

Regular Show #25 (Cover B Andrew Greenstone), $3.99

In this stand alone issue one of the characters gets possessed by a fitness device! I’ve never read any Regular Show books, but the more I read the descriptions, the more I think I should start.

the spire

Spire #1 (Of 8)(Cover A Jeff Stockely), $3.99

Spire #1 (Of 8)(Cover B Aaron Conley), $3.99

Spire #1 (Of 8)(Cover C Rob Guillory), AR

Spire #1 (Of 8)(Cover D David LaFuente), AR

The debut issue of The Spire was fantastic! There is a guy who speaks solely in rhymes and it’s pretty much my favorite thing. This issue kind of reminded me of the part in Bone where they all seek refuge behind the city gates and all manner of different species and classes come together. I really enjoyed the unique lettering in this issue and the story felt like an epic fantasy/sci-fi adventure in the making. I would highly recommend picking up The Spire!!

Woods #14 (Cover A Michael Dialynas), $3.99
The Woods is beautiful and sad as always. I’m really intrigued by Karen’s storyline and I hope we get much more of her in the future. Things at the school are immensely disheartening, but I hope that all will be well soon. Knowing some of James Tynion’s other works however, I can’t be too set on having a happy ending for this series.
