Dark Horse Expands ‘The Witcher’ Graphic Novels With New Tale From ‘The Last Wish’

Dark Horse Comics has announced that The Witcher series of graphic novels continues with the fifth instalment, aptly named The Witcher, from The Last Wish short story collection.

Thanks to the hit video games and Netflix’s popular live-action adaptation, The Witcher is one of the hottest fantasy properties in the world right now. With its immense presence across a number of different mediums, the best-selling graphic novels from Dark Horse Comics have been a steady success.

Dark Horse Comics has been faithfully adapting Andrzej Sapkowski’s short stories from The Last Wish into the graphic novel series as part of an ongoing project. Working with a variety of artists, the journey began in 2021 with A Grain of Truth, with a script adaptation by Jacek Rembiś. Since then, we’ve seen comic versions of The Lesser Evil (2023) also scripted by Jacek Rembiś, and The Edge of the World (2024) by Magdalena Salik.

Next up is The Witcher: The Witcher, scripted by Aleksandra Zielińska, with art by Michael Dowling, colours by Luis NCT, letters by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and cover art by Kai Carpenter.

“Andrzej Sapkowski’s work was my favorite read growing up and played a formative role in shaping my literary path,” Zielińska said in a statement. “Adapting one of his stories into a comic is not only a great honor, but also the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Especially because this particular piece – The Witcher’s first iconic short story – marks the beginning of an extraordinary saga that has since flourished across novels, games, and other media. Being a small part of that legacy means the world to me.”

“This story taps into the underlying horror that I feel is so important to The Witcher – the Gothic, body-horror, rising sense of dread and visceral shocks  – a world I really enjoy creating visually,” Dowling added.

As for the story itself, the synopsis reads:

Geralt pursues a proclamation from a king of a bloodthirsty monster plaguing his palace. A hefty reward is offered to cure the beast, but not to kill it, for the king holds a secret—what lies beneath the palace is beyond the spawn of evil. Charlatans and amateurs have tried and failed to answer the region’s plight. Now, Geralt sets out to claim the bounty—by decree of the king or by the pleas of those who wish the creature dead.

The Witcher: The Witcher releases as a 48-page hardcover on December 16th. Will you be picking it up?
