DC Studios 6 Year Masterplan Revealed — And There’s A Lot Of Content Coming Our Way!

If you thought superhero fatigue was beginning to settle in, think again. James Gunn and Peter Safran’s all-new DC Studios Universe plans to release 7 projects a year for the next 6 years!

If there’s one thing superhero franchises are great at, it’s delivering a gluttony of projects. Look no further than the all-encompassing Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU peaked with its releases in 2021, dropping a grand total of nine projects across movies and TV shows. This included four live-action films: Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

While James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios franchise may never reach that immense level of churning out content, they are aiming for an annual slate of content. So far, the franchise has seen the release of animated series Creature Commandos (which is fantastic, by the way), and David Corenswet will debut as our new live-action Superman this July. Looking ahead to future projects, there’s everything from a Supergirl movie, Woman of Tomorrow, to a series of shorts following Krypto the dog.

During a press event at Warner Bros., as attended by Collider, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran laid out the plan for the future of the franchise. With a mixture of tentpole blockbusters like Superman, to myriad TV and animated projects, he sees it all culminating in two live-action movies per year; one animated film per year; two live-action shows, and two animated shows annually.

“Our unified approach frees us to tell a diversity of stories across the full spectrum of genres and scales, from tentpole events like Superman to family animated fair like Dynamic duo to indie-style chillers like Clayface, and our production goal is two live action films and one animated film per year, and we’re also targeting two live action and two animated series for Max per year.”

This sure seems like an explosive start to the new DC Universe. Marvel built up to releasing this level of content turnover over way over a decade. DC is dropping it all from its infancy. Will it be too much for audiences to keep up with? Or will it become everyone’s new favorite connected universe? If one thing is for sure, these studios are obsessed with quantity, but will the quality be there consistently? Only time will tell!

It all kicks off on the big screen with Superman, which premieres in theatres July 11. For our comprehensive list of every Marvel and DC movie coming in 2025, check out the exciting slate here.
