Doctor Who fans rejoice! Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor will return for more adventures alongside beloved companion Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper. The new series comes in the form of a Big Finish audio drama!
Big Finish began making Doctor Who audio dramas in 1999, beginning with The Sirens of Time. Over the years, fans have listened to so many incredible audio adventures through space and time. The audio dramas have featured numerous former Doctors and companions, but the iconic duo of Christopher Eccleston (the Ninth Doctor) and Billie Piper (Rose Tyler), has always been elusive.
The announcement of the beloved duo returning has made an instant wave of hype from fans. Of course, Eccleston has been incredibly vocal of not wanting to return to the franchise over the years. While this isn’t a TV foray, audio adventures is better than nothing. The new series will consist of twelve, hour-long, full-cast audio adventures.
“I am so happy to be back recording more adventures for the Ninth Doctor with Billie. I don’t think my Doctor exists without Rose. He’s a ‘one man, one companion’ kind of alien,” Eccleston said in a statement. “We’ve explored him on his own at Big Finish, as a loner. But there’s a resilience and a bravery and a deep empathy to Billie as Rose, that’s why I do this. They complete each other.”
Piper also commented on the triumphant return. “I can’t think of a better time for Rose to reunite with her first Doctor than now. Twenty years after she first ran into the TARDIS and towards adventure, here we are again, me and Chris, ready to have fun facing the universe – and the monsters – together.”
