Doctor Who fans rejoice! The BBC has revealed an April 12 release date for the new season, marking Ncuti Gatwa’s second spell as the Fifteenth Doctor!
The Doctor Who franchise is midway through something of a new era at the moment. The long-running British sci-fi series is being made with Disney cash, meaning a bigger budget than ever before, giving each episode a grander scope. With new episodes dropping on Disney+ outside the UK (where it retains its BBC release), the series has the opportunity to reach a significantly larger audience.
The rebooted series launched in 2024. It received mixed reviews. Episodes ranged from fantastic, like 73 Yards and Rogue, to more disappointing entries like The Devil’s Chord and Space Babies. The best thing about the new era is Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor. He plays the role superbly, and his chemistry with companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) is infectious.
This brings us to season 2, which the BBC has now confirmed will air on April 12th. Mark your diaries, folks! The new season marks the return of the Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday, but it’ll also see the arrival of Varada Sethu’s all-new companion Belinda Chandra. Check out what’s in store by watching the official teaser trailer below:
Alan Cumming joins season 2!
The release date isn’t the only that the BBC recently announced. They also confirmed the arrival of Emmy-winning actor Alan Cummings to its cast. Per DoctorWho.tv, Cumming will voice a rogue cartoon character in the season’s second episode:
“Cumming lends his voice in Season 2 to Mr Ring-a-Ding, a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, in 1952, after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding suddenly looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside – and the consequences are terrifying.”
Varada Sethu celebrates joining Doctor Who!

One of the most exciting newcomers to the upcoming series is Varada Sethu (Cinta Kaz in Star Wars series Andor), who plays another companion of the Doctor, named Belinda Chandra. Sethu actually made her Whoniverse debut as Mundy Flynn in season 1 episode Boom, but her character in that was entirely different to Chandra.
Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine, Sethu rhapsodised about her return to the series:
“Since I’ve started, it’s just been so much fun. It’s all been at breakneck speed: I got the script for Episode 1 about two weeks before we started. And then, obviously, each storyline and each setting is something else… It’s a new world. It’s a whole new timeline – appropriately enough! It’s absolutely incredible.”
We can’t wait to see her step into the TARDIS!
What’s up next for the Doctor Who Universe?
While the future of the Whoniverse on Disney+ is in a precarious stage — season 1 didn’t perform amazingly on the streamer — Â the series has an exciting short-term tenure at the House of Mouse. For instance, later this year the new era will see its first spinoff series, titled The War Between the Land and the Sea. Created by Russell T Davies, the 5-part series follows UNIT as they deal with an uprising from the Sea Devils, posing a worldwide threat while the Doctor isn’t around to save it.
Beyond that, there’s no word on where the Whoniverse is headed next. There’s no doubt it will continue to be on our screens, but whether that’s on Disney, we don’t know. We’ll enjoy Doctor Who season 2 regardless. Roll on April 12th!
In the meantime, the Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday both return in Everyone Must Go, a new graphic novel from Titan Comics.
