Forgotten ‘The Boys’ Spinoff Not Returning for Another Season

Prime Video’s The Boys is concluding with its fifth and final season, but the franchise will continue to endure through spinoff projects like Gen V and Mexico. However, showrunner Eric Kripke has confirmed that 2022 spinoff The Boys: Diabolical is not returning for another season.

The Boys is one of the most popular superhero shows out there — which is a pretty big feat, given the industry dominance of Marvel and DC. The mother series will end with its fifth and final season in 206, but fear not, there’s also a couple of spinoffs. Of course, Gen V is currently airing. Plus, there’s also The Boys: Mexico, which is currently in development.

The franchise actually aired its first spinoff back in 2022 in the form of Diabolical. The animated anthology aired 8 episodes. In terms of ratings, it did okay. Sure, it didn’t blow fans away, but reviews were largely positive; it currently holds a very high 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

As for the future of Diabolical, Kripke admits that it’s no longer happening. “I don’t think there’s going to be a Season 2 of ‘Diabolical,'” he told The Wrap. “It’s not for lack of us pushing. I think ultimately the viewer numbers weren’t there to justify a second season, sadly. Although, we love it and Simon [Racioppa], the showrunner, would be game to do it, but we haven’t gotten a go ahead on that.”

The future of Gen V is unconfirmed, but the team have a plan in place for more seasons. “We have a plan for ‘Gen V’ Season 3, and we’re psyched about it, but we need enough viewers to watch Season 2 to justify Season 3. Now’s the time that they’re paying attention to the numbers,” Kripke explained. “So don’t watch even a year from now. Turn on Prime [Video] and watch it now. If enough people watch then we’ll get a Season 3.”

The upcoming spinoff, Mexico, is still in development. “‘Mexico’ is just being developed right now. The pilot script is being written,” he added. “Gareth [Dunnet-Alcocer] is a wonderful writer and I think it’s hilarious. I hope it gets made, but [it’s] just in that development phase.”

Gen V season 2 is currently airing on Prime Video.
