From Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, Absolute Batman has been one of the most celebrated comic book runs in recent years, and it’s still going stronger than ever. But how long can fans expect it to last?
DC Comics‘ Absolute Universe has given fans gem after gem, from Absolute Superman to Absolute Wonder Woman, to Absolute Batman. The latter, which is probably the most popular of all, comes from Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta. It re-imagines the Batman mythos, and it’s off-the-scale epic, dialling everything up to eleven. Absolute Batman offers up a much grittier take on the hero’s origin. He has not inherited wealth, and Alfred Pennyworth is not a butler, but a hardened operative. Wayne himself isn’t a rich socialite –in his mid-twenties, he works as a civil engineer. The Joker, rather, is the rich business mogul.
The series is a phenomenon. Issue #1 has already had an unprecedented 10 reprints, and each new issue dominated month-by-month sales lists throughout 2025. There’s still so much more story to tell — but exactly how much is in the pipeline? That’s the question we’re investigating today.
Absolute Batman has already told a gluttony of stories: issues #1-6 told The Zoo storyline; #7-8 was Absolute Zero; #9-14 was Abomination; #15 was the Joker Special; and #16 is the second part of the Wonder Woman crossover arc. Issues #17-18 will tell a mini arc featuring Scarecrow.
Beyond that, no conclusion has been announced, but during a Ask Me Anything session on Substack in 2025, Snyder revealed that he and Dragotta have already mapped out around 35-40 issues for the series. What’s more, Snyder has an endgame arc in mind: “We know the big final chapter of it.”
Additionally, following the immense success of Absolute Batman, which could very well go down as one of the character’s greatest runs of all-time, Snyder addressed his hopes for how the series will be ultimately remembered. “I hope it reminds people that these characters are meant to be renewed,” he said. “They’re meant to be burned down and put together. Batman weaponizes his trauma to make the world better, that’s how he wins.”
Absolute Batman is going from strength to strength. Looking ahead to the upcoming Scarecrow arc, Snyder says it will “completely transform” the series, adding: “By the end, something really huge happens that I think will get you guys super excited.”
