Acclaimed Hollywood filmmaker Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit) is teaming up with Drew Pearce (Fall Guy) for an all-new Judge Dredd movie.

Taika Waititi has a pretty stellar track record when it comes to comic book projects. Look no further than Thor Ragnarok — the movie that single-handedly rejuvenated the entire Thor franchise. He’s also rebooted classics too, most notably with his whacky reimagining of Time Bandits, starring Lisa Kudrow. Now, his next project is lined up: an all-new Judge Dredd movie.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Waititi is attached to direct new feature film take on Dredd. In addition, Drew Pearce is on board as a screenwriter. His previous credits include Fall Guy and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Apparently both Pearce and Waititi are enormous fans of the source material, and have been passionate about bringing this project into fruition for many years. The project is currently being shipped around Hollywood.

If you’re unfamiliar with Judge Dredd, the character was created by John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra and hails from comics published by 2000AD in the 1970s. Put simply, the story takes place in Mega-City One, a huge, crime-ridden city in a dystopian future. There, crime is policed by Judges, who are assigned the role of judge, jury and executioner. And the most feared Judge of all is Dredd.

Dredd (2012) has surged in popularity in 2025!

The timing couldn’t be much better, either. Earlier this year, the cult 2012 Dredd movie had a resurgence on streaming. Helmed by Pete Travis (Civil War) and written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later), the movie bombed heavily at the box office, taking a reported $41.5 million from a $30-$45 million budget. Even so, Dredd remains a cult film for geeks. It actually received pretty decent reviews at the time; the viewership numbers were simply below par. Plenty of blame can be put on its lame marketing, too.

But Dredd underwent a big surge in popularity earlier this year. When the Top 10 charts on HBO Max were released February 3, 2025, Dredd came in at #8. Not a bad feat for a 13-year-old movie.

It was actually the second Dredd movie to hit screens. The first released in 1995 with Sylvester Stallone in the main role, but that adaptation was just plain bad.
