After seeing iconic DC heroes re-imagined in the Absolute Universe, we’ve been thinking how such a similar concept would work in the Marvel Universe. In a recent sketch, long-time Marvel artist Mark Brooks drew ‘Absolute Wolverine’, and it’s pretty magnificent.

DC’s Absolute Universe is probably the best and most popular comic book line of recent years, and that’s more than reflected in comic sales. The creative, unique, and reimagined takes have rejuvenated these characters. They’re similar enough to feel authentic, but different enough to feel novel and fresh. They have everyone flooding into comic stores for the latest issues. The most successful ongoing series is Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s Absolute Batman, but the line offers a lot more, not least Deniz Camp and Javier Rodriguez’s mind-bending Absolute Martian Manhunter

Mark Brooks is one of the most esteemed and celebrated comic book illustrators out there. His work spans far and wide, but his perhaps best known for his extensive work on Marvel projects including X-Men (notably House of X, Immortal X-Men), to Spider-Man, Avengers, Secret Empire, and Fantastic Four.

In a recent Instagram post, Brooks shared his imagining of ‘Absolute Wolverine’ as a “quick warm-up sketch” for some fun. And while the artwork may well just be a bit of fun, fans are loving it; the post has since racked up over 10K likes. This version of Wolverine takes inspiration from Absolute Batman. It takes everything we know about Wolverine and dials it up to eleven. Notably with Brooks’ vision, his bloodied claws are ginormous.

Take a look at Absolute Wolverine below:

Of course, if this version of Absolute Wolverine were to come to life, the claws would be an issue. “Don’t ask me how his claws work,” Brooks captioned in his post. “I have no idea.” Perhaps they’re non-retractible claws. That would be something.

Brooks may not be ushering an Absolute Marvel Universe, but he is drawing a few stellar variants for the DC Absolute Universe. Be sure to check out his Instagram page to keep tabs on all his magnificent work.
