After much anticipation, Marvel Zombies has finally aired. A brutal reimagining of the Marvel Universe after a zombie apocalypse has swept Earth, the 4-episode miniseries was a big hit.

Created by Bryan Andrews and Zeb Wells, Marvel Zombies takes place after the Avengers and most of the world’s population have been turned into super-powered undead. It’s set around 5 years after the original What If…? episode that introduced zombies into the alternate MCU timeline. The responsibility to find a cure and save the planet falls to young Kamala Khan and Shang-Chi, and a small group of survivors.

If you’re reading this post, there’s a high chance you’ve already seen the series. So how does it end? Well, in the final stages, Wanda Maximoff fully embraces has status as Queen of the Dead, and plans to harness the great Asgardian army in New Asgard as new recruits in her already immense zombie army. A battle ensues, but Thor — apathetic and down and out — sacrifices himself to save Kamala and her team. Out of this battle, only Kamala (Iman Vellani), Blade (Todd Williams), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), and Katy (Awkwafina) make it out alive.

Our team escapes New Asgard via spacecraft. Finally in outer space, Kamala signals for the help of the Nova Corps to save the planet. However, it turns out that the Nova Corps has already marked Earth for destruction, deeming it a lost cause.

Plunged back to Earth, Kamala and the team find themselves in the mystical sanctuary of Kamar-Taj, where they’re joined by Peter Parker (Hudson Thames), Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Rintrah (Adam Hugill), Sara (Sheila Atim), and The London Master (Daniel Swain). They reveal that the Infinity Stones have been absorbed by the Hulk, giving him the title of Infinity Hulk.

Naturally, Wanda — and her enormous zombie army — step into the scene to attack Infinity Hulk, and the show’s epic final battle takes place. Eventually, Wanda manages to grab Infinity Hulk and take his power. She implores Kamala to join her. “I need you… We can fix this,” Wanda says. “You’ll help me bring them all back. Kamala, look around. The suffering. Save them. Take my hand. All will be made whole. You can still save the world, like you always wanted.”

Kamala takes Wanda’s hand, and a huge surge of energy sets the screen white. In the next shot, we see Kamala back in New Jersey. Both Riri and Kate are there, and they go for boba. All seems right again. However, Kamala sees brief flashes of zombies roaming the streets. This is not reality; it’s a world ruled by the Queen of the Dead.

Is Marvel Zombies returning for season 2?

Marvel Zombies was originally intended as a limited series. But even so, it ends leaving plenty of scope for another season. Moreover, executive producer Brad Winderbaum has teased that the team aren’t short of ideas.

“[Co-creator and director] Bryan [Andrews] and I geek out all of the time on the Marvel universe. There’s so much lore baked into this thing, and so many stories to tell,” he told CBR. “And if people subscribe to Disney Plus and watch this show, we may have an opportunity to tell those stories.”

As it stands, Marvel Zombies has not been renewed for another season. But never say never.
