Marvel Zombies, an upcoming What If…? spinoff from Marvel Animation arrives on Disney+ this October.

The MCU has a great slate of shows coming up in 2025. We’ve already had Daredevil: Born Again, which was an outstanding return for Charlie Cox’s beloved hero. And of course, the shows continue to come with Irohheart also coming our way.

Marvel Zombies, a post-apocalyptic take on the Marvel Universe, drops on October 3, 2025, perfectly timed for spooky season. Created by Zeb Wells and based on the comics by Robert Kirkman, the series follows the Marvel Universe after a zombie apocalypse. This alternate universe was first introduced on-screen in the MCU’s What If…? series, which explores how key events in the franchise would have unfolded if characters and arcs had been altered.

The episode, season 1×5, “What If…? Zombies” was one of the highest-rated episodes of the series, prompting Marvel Studios to develop a spinoff series continuing the story. The upcoming 4-episode series is created by Zeb Wells and directed by Bryan Andrews (who also helmed the What If…? Zombies episode). Some of the main cast include Spider-Man (voiced by returning voice actor Hudson Thames), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and Late Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).

Of course, the series also features a number of zombified heroes, too, such as Captain America, Hawkeye, and Captain Marvel.

Marvel Zombies has been stamped with a TV-MA rating, suggesting plenty of violence, gore, and more mature themes. This is the first Marvel Animation project ever to receive a TV-MA rating. As for live-action shows, Marvel has begun incorporating more TV-MA content in recent years, such as Echo and Daredevil: Born Again.

“We go for the throat — no pun intended. It’s pretty wild, pretty out there,” showrunner Bryan Andrews teased in a previous interview with The Walt Disney Company. He also revealed the return of a fan-favorite. “An old favorite also shows up: Zombie Cap makes an appearance,” he teased. “He has quite a scuffle with another main character, and I think fans will love it.”

In addition, Brad Winderbaum, the Head of Marvel Television and Marvel Animation, teased that the show still has plenty of heart amid the despair. “In many ways, animation is the most direct access you’ll ever have to a filmmaker’s imagination. If you can conjure it in your mind, you can put it onscreen. Marvel Zombies is proof of that,” he explained. “It’s not just a zombie story, it’s a sweeping adventure — one with themes of hope and despair, and that’s what you want from a rich zombie story.”

All in all, Marvel Zombies looks to be one of the most exciting projects in the MCU’s remaining 2025 roster. The 4-episode series comes to Disney+ on October 3! Will you be tuning in?
