Meet ‘Birddad’: Emily Brooks Millar’s Wonderfully Offbeat New Comic

Emily Brooks Millar is the daughter of legendary comic book writer Mark Millar, and she’s making waves in the world of comics. Her newest work, Birddad, is a wild, whimsical and all-too-familiar tale.

Emily Brooks Millar is doing her father proud. A multi-disciplined creative, Millar made her debut in comics with As Told By Rats and Be More Gus — both in her incredibly charming A Broken Apple universe. Her works are charming, full of dark comedy, with satirical elements. She’s got a signature style, and it works wonders.

Her latest work in the A Broken Apple universe, Birddad, is a kick-ass graphic novel, to say the least. It’s a bit wild, a lot whimsical, and a boatload of fun. Launched on Kickstarter, Birddad had a wonderfully successful campaign, gaining the backing of 74 and raising an impressive £3,992. So what’s it all about? Well, in the words of the pitch on Kickstarter, it’s all about a rambling, fast-talking, attention-seeking ladies’ man… who’s also a bird. A pigeon, to be exact.

“He’s lived a long and fruitful life, full of adventure, questionable wisdom, and the occasional existential crisis. Now, in his very own 72-page softcover graphic novel, he’s ready to take flight. This project was written and illustrated in my home studio, where I’m surrounded by city pigeons and their chaotic family dynamics. It seems only right that Birddad was hatched in the company of his real-world counterparts, all equally dramatic in their own way.”

This is another triumphant work from Millar, who’s representing young Scottish comic creators with style. Take a look at her unique, cartoonish art style:
