Netflix has officially confirmed that its epic fantasy series The Sandman will conclude with its second season, airing later this year.
The Sandman premiered on Netflix in August 2022 to great reviews from critics and casual fans alike. The series, based on the seminal comic book, follows Dream of the Endless (Tom Sturridge), the cosmic entity who rules The Dreaming; the realm we all visit when we fall asleep at night. The Sandman is a story about stories. It tells tales in a range of themes, from contemporary drama, to myth and fantasy, to horror.
Netflix renewed the series for “more episodes” on November 2022, but they never confirmed the show’s structure. However, leaks from filming suggested that it would be the show’s final season. The show had filmed scenes that take place in the final issues of the comic book. For die-hard fans, this announcement won’t come as much of a surprise.
The announcement of the show’s ultimate fate was made by showrunner Allan Heinberg. Per Variety:
“‘The Sandman’ series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”
The final season of The Sandman is expected to contain 12 episodes. Naturally, this won’t be anywhere near enough to cover the entire story from the comics. However, it won’t leave fans hanging. The series will reach a natural conclusion. The report from Variety confirms that it was always the plan to end the series with its second season, meaning this is no real premature cancellation.
The Sandman season 2 premieres later this year on Netflix.
