No, Netflix’s ‘The Sandman’ Was Not Cancelled

Fans of Netflix’s The Sandman have been waiting for the latest season to air since the first batch of episodes in 2022. Despite what some reports might have you believe, the series was not cancelled by Netflix.

Over the years, Netflix has garnered a reputation for cancelling popular shows before their time, whether it’s Lockwood and Co., or even Sandman Universe series Dead Boy Detectives. There’s many examples out there; the subject is well-documented.

However, when it comes to The Sandman, while it might seem like the show was cancelled (especially with numerous publications reporting it as such), don’t get it confused. Netflix did not cancel the series. It’s true that the team behind the series wanted to tell a longer, broader story, covering the entire Sandman saga, but when Netflix renewed the show, the aim was to cover Dream’s story through its conclusion. The team achieved this.

When showrunner Allan Heinberg first planned out the show, it was a 3-season series. But the Netflix renewal meant that the focus was switched up, telling only the story of Tom Sturridge’s protagonist, Dream. “I had always thought of The Sandman as a three-season show with 11 episodes in each season, and initially I had crafted season two to end with Orpheus’ death and Dream’s response to it,” Heinberg told The Hollywood Reporter.

“And then the third season was going to be The Kindly Ones [the ninth and penultimate installment of the original Sandman comics], and everything that comes after. And when we took A Game of You out of the mix, it created all the space we needed for The Kindly Ones and everything that came after. So it was a very organic process of looking at the comics and saying, ‘If we’re just telling Dream’s story, what are those elements, and can we do it in the 11 episodes that we had? And then [we’ll have] the additional Death episode at the end.'”

Season 2 doesn’t end on a cliffhanger. It tells a full, comprehensive story, ending on its own terms. On X, Shadi Petosky, who worked on the series, echoed this, adding, “Canceled brings to mind ‘unfinished.’ But the showrunner planned out the complete arc — the show concludes where Dream’s story ends. It’s a finished piece.”

It’s also been widely discussed that the show may have been cut short as a result of the sexual assault allegations against disgraced author Neil Gaiman. In this case, the final format of the show was already confirmed — and filming had even begun taking place — when the allegations were made.

In another interview, Heinberg told Entertainment Weekly that the decision to end the series with season 2 was made 3 years ago, long before the Neil Gaiman allegations were made. “It was a decision we made three years ago,” he said.

Unlike season one, Gaiman’s involvement in the second season was minimal, as reported by numerous members of the cast and crew. Hundreds of wonderful, incredibly talented people worked on this show. We celebrate them. Their creativity, vision, and dedication. We can separate it from Gaiman, and we will.

The Sandman season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
