The Big Sick writers Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani set their sights on Image Comics series Sex Criminals, and a live-action adaptation is on the way!
Prime Video already has a rich history of comic book adaptations, especially in the superhero space. Look no further than The Boys and Invincible — both of which are returning for new seasons in 2026. Next up, the streamer has set sights on popular Image Comics series Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky. It’s being developed into an 8-episode drama.
Best described as Bonnie & Clyde meets The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Sex Criminals follows the heartfelt, yet laugh-out-loud romance of Suzie and Jon. When Suzie and Jon have sex, time stops. Literally. So they have lots of sex, fall in love, and eventually start robbing banks. Until they find out they’re not alone.
First published in 2013, the series was told over 30 issues. Sex Criminals is regarded as one of the most esteemed series to come out of Image Comics. The accolades stack up. It went back to print dozens of times, was translated around the world in a half-dozen different languages, and was banned and praised in equal measure. It also became TIME Magazine‘s “Comic of the Year” and won Eisner and Harvey awards for “Best New Series.”
Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick) and Tze Chun (Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai) are co-creators of the upcoming Prime Video adaptation. In addition, Nanjiani is also set for an acting role.
“Sex Criminals is the exact kind of thing Winter Coat aims to bring to life: love stories in weird places,” said Gordon and Nanjiani, per Deadline. “From the moment LuckyChap brought us Matt and Chip’s comic book, we knew we wanted to bring these characters to screen and are so excited to do that alongside Tze Chun and Prime Video.”
“We’re overjoyed to have such talented people bring our dumb comic to life,” added original creators Fraction and Zdarsky.
“Sex Criminals is bold, hilarious, and wildly original, with a love story at its core that feels both deeply human and completely unexpected,” said Peter Friedlander, Global Head of Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “Emily, Kumail, and Tze have brought a fresh, and emotionally grounded take to this incredible property. With our collaborators at LuckyChap, Winter Coat Films, and comic book creators Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, we’re thrilled to bring this unforgettable world and its characters to our global Prime Video audience.”
