Later this year we return to Westeros for HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — HBO’s latest Game of Thrones spinoff. To prepare for the adventures to come, comic readers must check out
Set 100 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows a young squire, Egg, navigating the rough, brutal Seven Kingdoms on his journey to becoming a well-respected Knight. On his journey he meets Duncan (or “Dunk”), who’s ardently determined to reinvent himself as a Knight by winning a tourney.
The original series written by George R.R. Martin is still unfinished. Martin began the saga in 1998. It currently consists of three novellas: “The Hedge Knight” (1998), “The Sworn Sword” (2003), and “The Mystery Knight” (2010). By 2015, the three novellas were combined into a novel titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Martin has since revealed that he plans to write more tales about Dunk and Egg, but he hasn’t published any further works yet.
Even so, HBO will release a 6-episode TV adaptation of the novel later this year, starring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg. The series doesn’t have a trailer yet, but we do have a first look image. Check it out:
Read the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms graphic novels!
We could implore you to read the novel, which you definitely should. But as we’re a site that celebrates the comicsmedium, I can’t recommend Ben Avery and Mike S. Miller’s full-colour graphic novel adaptations of the saga enough!
The comics are a magnificent adaptation of the original work. Avery keeps it faithful to the source material, while Mike D. Miller’s art adds a while new perspective to the story. It helps visualise what the TV show will end up looking like. Whether you’re suffering from Game of Thrones withdrawal and want a visual story to read now, or you want to get ahead of the curve before the upcoming TV adaptation, these are the perfect books for you!
The first graphic novel, The Hedge Knight, is available for purchase here on Amazon. Its sequel, The Sworn Sword, can be purchased here. And finally, The Mystery Knight — my personal favourite of the trilogy — can be purchased here.
