A reliable industry insider has reported that AMC is “in development” on project that would see The Walking Dead sequel shows converge into one spinoff series, essentially becoming ‘The Walking Dead Season 12’.

In 2026, The Walking Dead Universe will be in its most precarious state after 15 years on our screens. The main show ended back in 2021, and since then the franchise has relied on a number of spinoff sequels to carry the story forward. The main spinoffs have been The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead: Dead City, and the requisite The Ones Who Live, which marked the triumphant return of both Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira).

Daryl Dixon will end in 2026 with its fourth season, meaning the only Walking Dead show left on our screens will be Dead City, which has wrapped its third season. Beyond that, the future of The Walking Dead remains uncertain. However, according to a report from long-time industry insider Daniel Richtman, better known as DanielRPK, AMC is exploring options for a series that would unite the spinoffs. His report says that the project is “in development.”

This news isn’t completely out of the blue. There have been mumblings of converging the franchise’s spinoffs before. Look no further than Scott Gimple, the man who oversees the Walking Dead Universe. “The dream would be that these shows somehow converge in some way, narratively,” he said during New York Comic Con in 2023, per Comic Book. As for what would essentially be ‘season 12’, he added: “I”m not against it.”

Moreover, even star Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) has revealed in recent months that discussions have been ongoing for his return to the franchise. “There’s a conversation happening right now,” he said in an interview with Laura Kuenssberg.

Right now, nothing is confirmed, but if The Walking Dead Universe is to endure on our screens, there’s gonna have to be a new spinoff at some point in the near future. With Daryl Dixon officially concluding, once Dead City ends, there’s officially no more content in the pipeline for the first time since the main series began in 2010.
