Review: Bronze Faces #1 Is A Powerful, Meaningful and Compelling Comic

From New Masters creators Shobo and Shof, and artist Alexandre Tefenkgi (The Good Asian) comes Bronze Faces; a descent into Nigerian history and the horrors of colonialism.

I was a big fan of Shobo and Shof Coker’s work on New Masters, so when I heard that they were working on a new series at BOOM! Studios, it’s fair to say that I was pretty hyped. And then when I read the premise for their new comic Bronze Faces, it excited me even more. The celebrated authors draw from their Nigerian heritage and offer deep dive into Nigerian history and mythology.

Bronze Faces is set primarily in Soho, London, where childhood friends Timi, Sango, and Gbonka unite, and learn that the British Museum has acquired the seminal works of Timi’s late father. Rightly, they see this as cultural theft. Therefore, the trio plan to reclaim the artwork — now showcased in the British Museum. But that’s not all: when they learn that the museum houses an incredible number of colonial-era stolen artefacts, their mission of reclamation becomes even greater. It’s a heist story, but it’s so much more than that.

Bronze Faces is narratively strong. It tells a story that’s rarely, if at all, covered in a fictional sense, but gets a lot of coverage in the world today. The comic covers themes of cultural reclamation and the lasting impacts of colonialism. The manner in which it tells its story, through personal connections with the characters, is extremely powerful. It’s a story that’s important and meaningful, while also being compelling enough to make you want to continue reading.

The panel layouts give the comic a cinematic feel; it flows wonderfully. The stylised expressions work really well, and the lettering was fitting — I particularly liked the styled headings. Overall, I really loved the artistic style of this comic. Artist Alexandre Tefenkgi did an incredible job at matching the art to the script.

Bronze Faces #1 arrives in comic stores on February 5, 2025. Needless to say, I highly recommend checking it out!
