Review: ‘The Voice Said Kill #1’

If you’re a fan of both Predator and Apocalypse Now (or as Image says, Fargo and Deliverance), you’re in for a treat with The Voice Said Kill, a new swamp-thriller from Si Spurrier & Vanesa Del Rey.

Of all comic publishers this year, I’ve been most impressed by Image Comics. From titles like Assorted Crisis Events, Bug Wars, Lost Fantasy, and You’ll Do Bad Things — there’s been some top tier projects hitting shelves. Up next this Summer is The Voice Said Kill, an all-new 4-issue series from Si Spurrier (John Constantine: HellblazerDead in America) and Vanesa Del Rey (Scarlet Witch, Spider-Women Alpha), featuring colors by John Starr and lettering from Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

Set in the wet, uncomfortable heat of the Louisiana bayou, The Voice Said Kill follows heavily pregnant park ranger Marie Burgau — left to her own devices after her team falls ill. Suffering from sickness herself (a result of her pregnancy), Burgau finds herself contending against a creepy, stealthy madman, off his mind on drugs, and out for blood.

The opening issue is tense, blending together a richly-written, almost Predator-esque narrative (albeit, our villain isn’t an alien, and our hero isn’t Arnie) with superb artwork. The super-sized debut brilliantly establishes our protagonist, detailing her connections with a local crime boss, and her connection to the crazed lunatic on the loose within the swamp. It also feels intricate, containing  plenty of humanity — especially with its themes of motherhood — that will have you immediately empathetic towards our protagonist.

Thanks largely to the amazingly psychedelic artwork from Del Rey and gorgeous colours from John Starr, this comic transports you into a place of immense uncertainty — the trippy visuals and page layout will have your head spinning, in a good way, of course.

Overall, issue #1 is fantastic. It descends readers into an intriguing arc, setting up suspenseful conflicts. It’s definitely one of the standout debut issues of 2025 so far.
