Writer: Warren Ellis
Artists: Stuart Immonen(p), Wade von Grawbadger(i), Dave McCaig(c)
Publisher: Marvel

After a pair of clunkers, Nextwave again makes with the Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Our band of misfit super-heroes track down the Beyond Corporation's main facility, and you can tell the creative team is back up to snuff when they open their fun visual gambit with slapstick interaction between Captain Marvel and Aaron Stack. They follow through with a splendid group wild take where the other Captain resembles a surprised monkey.

Underscored dialogue preps amusing comic moments when Dirk Anger and his uber Airship makes an appearance. What, asks you. Didn't Dirk Anger end his life a couple of issues ago? Yes, but it doesn't stop him from being personable and making a witty cameo.

This issue of Nextwave isn't just hilarious. It's also violent, and Stuart Immonent, Wade von Grawbadger and Dave McCaig juice the panels in lovely scenes of destruction.

"Let's save America by beating up everything we see."

It's a wonder the Team-America theme wasn't playing during this stirring delivery. I certainly heard it going through my head. Of course, Nextwave is more sophisticated and Marvelesque entertainment than Team-America. Well, it's Marvelesque, anyhow.

Nextwave proceeds to demolish the rest of the comic book in two page spreads of pure gleeful fantasy violence, encapsulated with spoilers in The Ellisonian.

The Ellisonian

Purple Soviet Apes--Possibly offshoots of the Red Ghost and his Super-Apes.

It the Colossal Beast--Apparently cloned by the Beyond Corporation.

Stephen Hawking--brilliant real-life disabled physicist who guest-starred on Star Trek:The Next Generation and Futurama. The Beyond Corporation cloned the genius, set his wheelchair up with Ben-Hur attitude adjusters and gave the creatures deadly blue eyeblasts.

Elvis--Purportedly dead king of song.

Modok--Giant head positioned on a floating chair. A product of AIM.

Eldok--Elvis + Modok.

Samauri Siamese Twins--Exactly what you think they are.

Batboy Chimney Sweeps--Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Batboy is a famous cryptozoological hoax perpetuated by Weekly Weird News.

Cyclopsoaurus--Rare species of brontosaurus having uncontrollable eye blasts that can only be filtered via ruby quartz.

Baboonarines--baboons with adamantinum claws.

Giant Baboonarine--See Baboonarines.

Snakes in a Plane---Oh, thank you, sirs.

Infant Terrible--Actual Fantastic Four foe, duplicated by the friendly folk at Beyond Corporation.
