Thanks to the immense success of Invincible on Prime Video, the comics have never been more popular. And creators Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley will soon return to their beloved superhero universe with Invincible Universe: Battle Beast!

While Robert Kirkman may best be known worldwide for creating The Walking Dead, his superhero series Invincible is slowly catching up in popularity. Thanks to Prime Video’s animated adaptation, Invincible is becoming a household name for casual superhero fans.

The story follows teenager Mark Grayson, the son of Omni-Man. His father is seen as the ‘Superman’ of Earth. When Mark gains his super Viltrumite powers, giving him super strength, endurance, and flight — he becomes Earth’s newest hero. However, when his father goes rogue and shows his true colours, the responsibility to keep Earth safe falls to Mark and his friends. And that’s just a taster of the story. Invincible is a brutal, complex and emotional adventure. The comics ran from 2003 through 2018. They were written by Robert Kirkman and illustrated by Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley.

Fast forward to today, and Kirkman and Ottley will return to fill in a gaping void: the story of Battle Beast. The upcoming comic will follow Battle Beast, one of the comic’s most popular characters. Battle Beast is a super powerful intergalactic warrior. His sole purpose is to seek out an opponent worthy of giving him an honourable death.

“What can I say? I just can’t get enough of the Invincible Universe!” Kirkman said in a statement, announcing his new comic, Invincible Universe: Battle Beast. “Moving from the comic series directly to the animated series, I haven’t really had a break. That said, while adapting the series to animation, I’ve been itching to do something new!”

“Longtime fans will know there’s a massive gap in Battle Beast’s appearances in the series between Invincible issue 19 and issue 55. There’s a lot of story to tell and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Battle Beast co-creator Ryan Ottley on board to tell it with me!”

Ottley also weighed in on his return to illustrate the comic. “A while ago, I was telling him [Kirkman] I wasn’t sure what project to do next, and when he mentioned us doing a Battle Beast series together, I jumped at the idea of being back on a creator-owned book, enlarging the Invincible Universe even more!”

Invincible Universe: Battle Beast begins in April 2025. Before that, however, the animated series returns for its third season on February 6, 2025.
