Ryan Reynolds is reportedly writing his very own Deadpool & X-Men team-up flick — but he hasn’t pitched it to Marvel yet!
Between playing Wolverine and various other roles, as well as co-running Wrexham Football Club, Ryan Reynolds is one of the busiest people in Hollywood. And yet, he’s somehow finding the time to write his own Marvel movie.
Reynolds’ portrayal of Deadpool is regarded as one of the single greatest casting decisions in superhero (and potentially film) history. He’s electric and hilarious in the role. He’s now played the character in a trilogy of movies, with the latest — Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) — grossing over $1.3 billion at the global box office.
While Reynolds is definitely best-known for his on-screen forays, he’s already got some good experience when it comes to writing. He’s got a writing credit for Deadpool 2, co-writing the screenplay alongside Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. So too did he work on writing Deadpool & Wolverine alongside Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, and director Shawn Levy.
Reynolds has previously announced that he’s in the midst of writing a non-Marvel movie, with the aim of reuniting himself with Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy. And also, according to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds is quietly working on a new Deadpool instalment. The report suggests that Reynolds is working on “various treatments for an ensemble film featuring three or four X-Men characters.”
Deadpool exists in his own bubble in the MCU right now. He’s not going to be involved in the upcoming ensemble movie, Avengers: Doomsday (barring a surprise, at least). Reynolds likes the idea that his character remains on the sidelines, causing chaos. “I like that he’s isolated,” he previously said during the Time 100 Summit. “If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we’re at the end. That’s his wish fulfillment, and you can’t give him that.”
Naturally, the Deadpool & X-Men team-up movie Reynolds is writing hasn’t been announced yet; it’s still in very early days. In fact, Reynolds hasn’t even pitched his idea to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige yet. But it’s worth keeping tabs on this project.
