Despite not appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his debut movie in 2021, Simu Liu has confirmed that he is returning to the franchise, and a sequel movie is still happening.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings premiered back in 2021. The movie was a big success among critics, delivering thrilling action sequences and introducing a whole new side to MCU lore and mythology. It performed decently at the box office too, grossing $432 million worldwide. Star Simu Liu will return as Shang-Chi in Avengers: Doomsday, which debuts later this year, but beyond that, the hero’s journey will continue in a sequel movie.
Progress on Shang-Chi 2 has been pretty quiet compared to other Marvel flicks. Developments are scarce, and there’s no release window set. However, fear not: it is happening. Don’t take that from us. In a recent interview with People, Simu Liu himself confirmed that Shang-Chi 2 is on the way, but fans will first see him return for Avengers: Doomsday.
“There’s not a whole lot to tease right now, other than I think, I sound like a broken record at this point, but it is happening,” Liu confirmed, adding: “But I think the more immediate tease is of course, is Doomsday… which I was lucky enough to be a part of and will be lucky enough to be a part of its successor in Secret Wars.”
While he can’t say much about Doomsday, he adds that filming the newest Avengers flick was a wonderful experience. “I came away from Doomsday with like, a lot of, a lot of really fantastic friendships,” he said, revealing that he grew a particularly close bond with Channing Tatum. “He’s just one of my favorite human beings… such an admirable person.”
Avengers: Doomsday premieres December 18 in cinemas. There’s no word on when Shang-Chi 2 will premiere, but we’ll keep you posted!
