What Looks Good for the Week of August 19, 2020

Columns, What Looks Good

It’s an indie triple-threat this week, with a double-dose of Image hits, and a great one from a publisher that somehow is in business despite minimal releases.

Decorum #4 (Image Comics)

(w) Jonathan Hickman (a) Mike Huddleston

While readers continue to wait on Marvel to get back to a regular publishing schedule for Hickman’s X-Men, readers can rejoice that his creator-owned series, Decorum, keeps trucking along at a regular clip. Great writing. Beautiful art. Must buy.

There are many assassins in the known universe, this is the story of the most well-mannered one. “Good manners is just being respectful of others. Whether they have a bounty or not, you should show respect for all people.”

Gideon Falls #24 (Image Comics)

(w) Jeff Lemire (a) Andrea Sorrentino (c) Dave Stewart

It isn’t often that we recommend something that is in the middle of an arc, but Gideon Falls is too good to not get a mention. Lemire’s writing is great. Sorrentino is sublime. This book continues to get weirder, and scarier, and better with each passing installment.

2019 EISNER AWARD WINNER, BEST NEW SERIES“WICKED WORLDS,” Part Three Sheriff Clara is trapped in “western” Gideon Falls. She’s holding her own with a six-gun, but a six-gun isn’t much help against a tidal wave of killer bugs!

Rai #6 (Valiant Entertainment)

(w) Dan Abnett (a) Juan Jose Ryp (c) Andrew Dalhouse

If there is one book Valiant is publishing that should be on everyone’s pull list, it’s Rai. Dan Abnett has thus far been the publisher’s new standard-bearer, continuing the great work Matt Kindt did with the character beginning back in the Fallen World miniseries. With Rai, Abnett has delivered a book that is balanced in terms of character development and plot progression, excelling in both. The art by Ryp is arguably his career-best, having created a diverse, lived in post-apocalyptic world into which readers are easily immersed.

A brand-new arc of the critically-acclaimed series starts here!

Rai and Raijin are drafted into the positronic Roman legions to face a savage threat.

About The Author

Daniel Gehen
Editor-in-Chief

Dan was introduced to the 1960s Batman show at a young age, which developed into a lifelong passion for comics. When he's not grinding out his day job, he can be found reading about Scarlet Speedsters, Web-Heads, or Sagas just about anywhere. If it's good he'll read it. If it's bad... there's a chance he still might read it.
