New Superman star David Corenswet reflects on meeting Will Reeve, the son of legendary Superman actor Christopher Reeve. “He’s the Superman type for obvious reasons.”
Superman is a character that transcends generations. One of the most recognisable fiction figures of all-time, he made his big screen debut in 1978, played by the late Christopher Reeve, who went on to play the titular hero in 4 solo movies. This makes him the most prolific actor to play the Man of Steel in feature films; Henry Cavill comes in second, appearing in 3 movies.
The latest actor to tackle the seminal role is David Corenswet, who makes his debut this July. The Superman movie not only introduces our titular hero, but it’s also the first live-action project in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s re-loaded DC Universe. It lays the foundations for what aims to be the next big cinematic franchise, competing head-to-head with the behemoth Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While the movie looks to the future with as much hope as Superman himself, it doesn’t forget the past. The writers managed to weave in a very special cameo with Will Reeve, the son of legendary Superman actor Christopher Reeve. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, David Corenswet reflected on the moment he met Will Reeves.
“Will is great,” he said. “He is the Superman type for obvious reasons. He’s tall, he’s handsome, and he’s got a great smile. Having him show up and give his support in that moment was very heartwarming. He also got to meet my kid when she was only a few months old. She happened to be on set that day, too. I don’t think she’ll remember it, but that was a nice little thing, as well, a little parallel.”
As for the cameo itself, Corenswet teases which scene to keep your eye on: “We were shooting a big climactic scene. He visited and watched us shoot a little bit.”
Will Reeve is a real-life ABC News and Good Morning America journalist, so he has indeed got a bit of Clark Kent inside him.
Funnily enough, Will Reeve wasn’t the only visitor to the set. Lots of comic book professionals got a glimpse of filming. “It was nice in the same way when we had all of the [DC] comic writers and artists visit set,” he explained. “They were all wearing their Superman T-shirts and they were all excited to be there. Anybody who’s involved with a great character, whether it’s directly as writing and drawing for them — or, in Will’s case, his dad put the character into the public consciousness — when those people are excited about what they see, that just gives you a little fuel to keep going.”
Superman debuts in cinemas on July 11, 2025.
